Wonder if it's harder on you if you get your first one at the age of 60

...interesting question. If you've been either getting the flu every few years or been exposed to it in your personal contacts, one supposes you would develop similar immunities to being vaccinated. They might even be superior immunities (longer lasting). But I'd guess there's no science on it, because the current wisdom is to get them. So why bother ?

So I did take a nap on the couch, and it was fantastic. The wife and the kid were knocked out, too, so I'm going to assume that it was the shots.

After waking, I put in a little more time on the project. Here's a progress shot: this is Slab #1 coming out of the clamps. It's now at full width, with the mortises for the legs/spacers already in place. I just need to trim and square the ends and then flatten, top and bottom. Slab #2 , which will be identical, in to the clamps to be ready for tomorrow. I was also able to get one of the legs/spacers all squared up and very close to the final dimensions.

We started getting them because of the kid. First, we got them when he was a baby to protect him; we didn't bring home any more bugs than we had to. A year or two later and we were getting the shots because he was in daycare/preschool, which is immunization bootcamp, and he was bringing home presents for us.

The flu strain(s) change from year to year, so there's no immunity from them. The flu shots are comprised of the weak/dead strains of the virus that they think will be the dominant ones for the season. It's not perfect, because the strains can change quickly; last year, an unanticipated strained showed up too late to make it in to the vaccine. It's still better than the alternative, though. The only way to come in to contact with these strains without the shot/nose mist is to encounter a more lively bug in the wild, which is more likely result in sickness.

It's been several years since I've gotten the flu shot. My understanding is each year they choose 3-4 viruses that are included in the that year's vaccine, so if the flu you get isn't one of these 3-4 then the shot did you no good. Since the vaccine is not a live virus, you shouldn't have any symptoms from the shot. The exception could be the nasal spray that is an attenuated virus and you might get a slight runny nose and sore throat. I'll take my chances and skip it again. I'm sure some in the medical field can give a more accurate account for this stuff.

Edit: cross posted with above.

Sounds like fun, at least in one direction.

Now, 35-44. About 40 miles west of here, 50+ mph winds are being recorded.

...I was talking more to the idea that someone who might not have ever had a flu shot might have a different (and more unpleasant) reaction to one if he waited until age 60 for his first one. I sort of understand how they work (as much as anyone, I think), because I had a 4-5 year mystery illness that was directly related to off the charts immune response.

If you get sick enough, it's remarkable how interested you become in the human immune response, and how it seems to work in people......a subject that you would think might be more well understood than it currently seems to be. :) So to be clear, what I'm saying is taht we are continually exposed to various agents that trigger various degrees of immune response, and that I don't see @LesterOfPuppets as doing something that is particularly ill informed in terms of how he might later react to flu shots.

Ah, yeah - no, I don't think that the reaction would be notably different, either.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't even bother with them anymore, either, but you can get them at Target for gods sake and, if I have to take the kid in, I might as well, too.

Cricket in Houston?

Turned on the TV and here's Warnie and Sachin (and a bunch of old guys) playing a game of cricket at some baseball stadium in Houston.

It's a very very very small field (at least cricket wise) but looks like they've got a few people in. Most seem to be Indians though. India Indians, not native American Indians.

those were great times.

the second gave me insane fever dreams of charlie from its always sunny yelling at me in gibberish language

Had a little slick singletrack on 28mm tire fun today. My phone really likes to brighten things up. It was REALLY dark in there at 5pm today.

Nice work, especially given that hand-planing hard maple is a chore!

I dunno if I've ever had the flu. People say, "Oh, you'd know if you had it!"

I've had a couple of pretty bad colds, never went to the doctor for any except that one time I got strep throat.

Ha - I wish it was maple. It's good ol' construction pine. I picked through the wide, long boards, since they tend to be straighter and cleaner. Planing is easy, but ripping 100+ feet of it with a handsaw qualified as a chore.

Enjoy.

Fit is better with the nishiki, always felt I was a bit too far forward, and was an absolute bear to deal with on long rides. With the build being more road oriented this was about the only way to go with this.

That said, still not done with it should be tomorrow. It won't look as bad as I thought it was going to.

theyre right.

everything hurt, i felt like i was high as a kite (but not in a good way) i started hallucinating **** from the fever, all i wanted to do was sleep

its an approximation of what i would expect dying to feel like, afterall various flu strains killed lots and lots of people in history books

Yep, there's also the one when going rapidly between hot spell and the chills.

I met this Doctor in the E.R who got mad at me by wasting his time by having the flu, and by not taking a flu shot as a preventative.
Turns out I had food poisoning, sure got embarrassed to give me that news.

He thought he knew everything.
