Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It rained pretty much all day today. I thought there was enough of a break this afternoon coming to get a ride in and got dressed and ready. Right as I opened the door to go, it started raining again.

I decided on a virtual Zwift ride... but the recovery in the hot tub with dog, Van Morrison and some wine was very real.

We had that on Friday - it was apocalyptic. NBC is actually still showing flood warnings for the counties just southeast of us.

November 10, 1975.. I remember hearing about it on the AM radio my dad used to listen to before leaving for work each morning. Does not seem that long ago.

His eyes don't worry me so much, but not so sure about the random single eye above him.

I don't see Van Morrison. Is he a neighbour of yours?

One of my favourite ballads, if not my outright favourite. Full of eerie emotion (if I can put it that way).

On one of our cross-country trips (to participate in a 24H race and BMB), we called into a small museum about the Fitzgerald. Fascinating. I see that an underwater explorer also has taken pictures of the ship resting on the bottom.

I'm getting ready to head to the first indoor training session of the winter.

Have I mentioned before how much I hate contraption riding?

It is a good ballad with the strange characteristic of containing not a single rhyme. Well maybe one or two, but that's about it. I'm too lazy to check right now. Even after all these years I keep waiting for two lines to rhyme, then recoiling when they never do. That is a little weird for a song, no?

Okay, so there is the "...pride of the American side" rhyme, but that almost seems like an accident.

I had to get up at 4.A.M. (!) to go to the bike shop and run the morning CompuTrainer session.

The guy had picked up a sharp rock on a ride and it burrowed through the tire during the session.

Action shot from yesterday's CX adventure, going up the "big" hill at the start/finish area. It was only like a 5% grade. It was warm (nearly 60) and sunny. I shed the arm warmers shortly after this picture was taken.

It was a fast course. About a mile with very few twisty bits and a couple of fast sections - speeds over 20mph. One on a gravel road and the other blasting thru the orchard crossing gravel roads. The second one was extra exciting because you catch air crossing those gravel roads.

I used all of the gears.

No time to "read" read this morning, but the pictures look great! Reading it is on my list of things to do later today. I've been tinkering with the blog idea, but haven't gotten around to it, yet. I think mine would focus on commuting (like I ever do that, right?) and camping stuff.

Halloween for my family ended up being a ton of fun. We had a great day and found out our new neighborhood does quite a bit for trick or treaters. Not a ton like some other neighborhoods, but every 3rd or 4th house had their porch light on or some decoration and everyone was super friendly. And I don't normally brag about these sort of things, but I freaking NAILED it with my daughter's costume this year. She was an astronaut last year, and then we found this cool dinosaur rider costume at Target, so I hit up the sewing machine the morning of Halloween to make the two come together and it turned out way better than I thought it would.
