Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Those are price quotes from the UK. You can't get Di2 for that cost in the U.S. My guess is that the quote from Sram for their product is based on what it will cost here.

What do you want to know?

I'm no expert, but I was able to spend some time with a Sram rep at a open house and got all the questions I asked answered.

PM me an offer.
Given that Shimano is a sponsor of the UCI it would seem surprising that some teams have to buy their own components. Maybe the lower ranked teams?

Why does Sir Brad mount his speed and cadence sensor below the chainstay?

While I am a Shimano guy as far as road bikes go, I must say................this really intrigues me and I would consider it.

mainly the price we can expect to see the group selling for when it's released (That's been addressed) and how that price compares to Di2 and possibly the new FSA group coming soon. I also wanted some riding impressions. How hard is it to get used to the new shifting scheme? I may have missed some information as I skipped most of the pages past page 5 or 6 because I didn't want to read somone else's pissing match.

Scott,

The story about how I bought the Canyon frame is a crazy one. I originally ordered the electric version Canyon SLX frame set in the winter of '14 with the intention of putting Di2 on, but my contact at SRAM thought he could get a field test set up for it if I waited a bit. It took a while but this Spring he was able to build it up at work, SRAM HQ. What a cool place that is, like a big candy store!

Here are a couple of photos he took when he was building it up. Definitely worth the wait.

Different subject, I was in your part of the world this summer on Maui to do the Cycle to the Sun up Haleakala. Very cool event, the views on top are spectacular. My first race with the Canyon too.

From what i've read, multiple reviews, it takes maybe 10 minutes. Left shifter move the derailleur left and right move it right.

I can't imagine it's any more difficult that switching from Shimano mechanical to DI2 to Sram. What about going from road to flat bar?

My road bike is Sram Red and my trail bike is Shimano Deore, its a no brainer.

One of female racers in Europe had it put on her bike like the morning of the race. She said it took no time at all to get used to the shifting.

Gravity. It's much easier to keep that sensor from falling down if it's already down, get it?
The real question is why isn't he using the new magnetless sensor..

The real question is when are we getting wireless brakes. Not a single cable in sight, talk about a clean look.

Shimano offers technical support to any team that uses their components, but they don't just hand over their hardware for free. In the past one team is sponsored by Shimano in the traditional sense, and it will be part of the team's name.

SRAM paid big dollars to get teams to use their components, and when they stopped, teams went back to what works.

They may give free stuff and not be a sponsor. Sponsors are on the list for a team as sponsors. Most the 17 World Tour teams are not sponsored by any component mfg.

The shift pattern eTap uses is very easy to adjust to. First ride I was shifting without thinking about which shifter to use to go to a higher or lower gear. Very rarely do I have a mis-shift.

If he flats and swaps out the wheel then the sensor would go with it..

one of those sensors is likely the UCI timing chip. they are mounted below the chain stay too.

i agree. A few years ago the Cervelo Test team bought Shimano components because they didn't get any support/freebies. That is a huge endorsement for Shimano, and it cost them(Shimano) nothing.

If they're part of the team's name they're giving a lot more than free gear. A named sponser would be paying a reasonable portion of the $10-30m it costs to run a team at the top level.

Shimano sponsored 7 world tour teams with components and I assume all of those teams get all their components for free. What can components for a team cost for a year? $60k? That's a drop in Shimano's marketing budget.

Sponsorship involved signed agreements. Free stuff does not.
My original point I stand by with a team that had 10 SRAM Red bikes last year (while my son used DA) is DA and RED are not the same. This year we are all on Shimano. Why would we PAY when we owned RED?

I don't know anything about your team. I was just commenting that Shimano sponsors many pro teams by giving them free equipment. I doubt there are any pro teams that have to pay for their equipment. And if Shimano does provide free equipment they would very likely have signed agreements as well. Why wouldn't they?
