The pictures don't show how bad the paint is, though. There really are quite a lot of nicks and scrapes, and a big scrape down the fork on the left. There's even a good sized ding in the top tube. Not a full on dent, but enough that you notice it.

Sorry, but I can't agree with the preservationists. Old isn't a virtue if it also means beat up. That frame is screaming for some Bondo and powder coating. As Mrs. Poole so famously said about being faced with a crappy situation, "You just have to scrape your shoe and move on."

The worst thing that happened was I lost 10 cans of Coke when they dropped 18" on to the side step of the van. Damned aluminium cans dent and burst, spewing Coke everywhere. Some of them were really subtle, and I had to listen carefully to hear the hiss. I opened and emptied all the bad ones.

Then the side door started to stick later in the event because of the sugary mess... so out with the water to wash it down.

But apart from that, we had food and water left over, which is the most important thing in my book. The last guy to the checkpoints had as much choice as the fastest one. And everyone was happy with the route, the weather... all of it.

I can go to bed tonight with a clear conscience. :thumb:

Excellent.

No way I'd do DT shifters. Suntour Barcons are still somewhat easy to find cheap. Although sometimes I have trouble shifting MTB triple with them, other times they sweep all three rings no problemo.

the only reason i didnt suggest barcons is im having a hard time finding 8speed shifters <$80 myself

dunno how many speedz that jawn has

ps: i haz 25.4 rando barz that need a home, jus sayin :innocent:

I don't get it but I have not even tried it. Some of my clubmates have and like it. As the weather gets colder and speeds drop, it makes sense. Maybe.

Olde Suntour Barcons shift 8-speed no problem, if you don't mind the non-indexed action.

The hardrock probably has 7-speed.

I really need to pull the trigger on a 10-speed cassette to go with my $50 Dura-Ace barends soon. I should probably get another set of those barends before they disappear, too.

Sounds like a lot of work. Also, Bondo is heavy.

Consistently the best prices I can find, I've ordered from here a few times:

Clincher tires only

As long as you don't mind waiting a bit, PBK usually has the best price on tires I can find.

Continental Grand Prix 4000S II

I am doing my best to look away from the light, but may give it a try sometime. I have 25 width GP4000s tires on the Roubaix (still using 23s on the Habanero) and I am told I could do ok with that setup.

Our club does a few of the Roubaix rides during the summer, with about 1/3 of the ride on unpaved roads. Some sections are challenging, so 25s might be fine, but 28's would probably be better. Just depends on how hard packed the roads are. Sounds ideal for a cx bike. Some of the strong guys can kill these sections.

Ouch. Nonetheless, also awesome. Because it was running.

55 miles, 5400 ft...today, 151 miles Friday,I think I've successfully rebooted my legs after too much time off. We'll see in about 2 days... I'm looking forward to a nice bottle of red and a fat steak later.

PBK has never had a good stock of tubeless, besides 23mm at times, when I've checked...they have zero tubeless as of this moment.

Don't trust them. At best on real gravel you'll not enjoy yourself, at worst you'll be walking or have to bail.

Don't get what? Gravel? Gravel is much more fun than road riding as long as you have the right tires...

Actually, on this particular course, the hills are certainly more pleasant on the bike, what with the ability to carry momentum from the downhills.

(This half-marathon course is also the bike course on a number of local tris.)

Fun has a different meaning to different folks, eh? Fun to me is riding on the smoothest, flattest road I can find. Go figure!
