Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK... SO, i have a mountain bike with an aluminum frame and rock shock in the front. I was thinking about taking the big ass tires of and rock shocks off and converting it to a type of road bike thingy. Is it even possible to get a different fork, road bike tires and wheels and make my mountain bike into a road bike?! If so, how should i go about doing it?! where would a good site be to get the necessary equipment to do so!? Thanks for any help!!!

Road bikes use a different sized wheel that won't work with the rim brakes on a mountain bike. Best bet is to get some high pressure 26" slicks, and maybe a rigid fork and ride like that. It won't be road-bike fast but it will be a big improvement.

Bikes: See sig.

Slicks + rigid fork is your best bet, although if I were you, I'd just save up for a road bike. The difference in geometry is astounding.

But, is there anyways to work it so i can convert it it into a road bike?! new breaks what ever?! my friends both have very nice road bikes and the one i have is massive, weighs 30 plus pounds and is from 1979. They smoke me... my mountain bike is nice, has al frame and weighs nothing. I would have a lot easier time keeping up with them if i was able to convert this. It would def take me a long time to save up for a decent roadbike... sadly... and i just got the mountain bike... it is easier to use when biking on campus. Sadly it is not as easy when doing long distance biking.

As was stated above... your MTB frame will only take 26" tires... no way you can fit 700c wheels on a mountain bike frame. You'll have to stick to MTB wheels, but you can get a decently light set of wheels and a set of 1.5" wide slicks and a rigid fork and you should be good to go. You'd actually be fine with just the 1.5" slicks (or narrower if possible) and the rigid fork. But in a sense you can't "convert" your mountain bike into a road bike. You might also want to swap out your rear cassette for a road cassette. I have a 12-26 cassette on my mountain bike.
