Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There are various crank position schemes. I haven't seen very many out of phase cranks at exactly 180º. Even in phase cranks are often a couple teeth out of phase to keep from hitting the stoker crank on the pavement when cranking out of a corner. Many years ago, my wife and I did some tandem racing and she was timed ever so slightly ahead to allow more aggressive cornering in crits.

I didn't mean phase between the captain and stoker, I mean just the stoker's cranks. One side is not 180 degrees from the other.

Yes, that would be an example of a racing machine though it looks a little extreme.

I'm not sure if divorce machine works, most people I see on tandems are couples.

Also, now that I've been staring at it too long, it really bothers me to see an aluminium brake track on disc brake wheels.

Edit: That and those hubs make me want to vomit.

And, I don't think those rims were ever considered to be that aero.

What brand/model are those wheels? They're pleasingly subtle.

The tandem wheels? They are a hybrid of SRAM rims to Roval hubs. I have no idea why anybody would do that or think they need discs on a speed machine designed for the flats.

Thank you, thank you! I can't believe the bike comes stock with Mavic Cosmics. I get that most people change the wheels first off, but it's like they're not even trying, and I have Ksyrium SLSs on one of my bikes!

I've seen that one around the internet a few times. It seems like a basically good concept with some of the poorest execution possible.

I was sarcastical. They're awful looking wheels. Wasn't there a thread here a few years ago where someone went nuts over how much faster they were on their S80s and everyone attacked him for the claim? I remember those wheels being a running gag for a while, maybe that was (gasp) the RBR forum.

I don't remember but I had a set at one time and did some informal roll down tests with them and they were no faster than low spoke count wheels that show up on many bikes today. Sold them for almost what I had in them.

What disturbs me is my modest potbelly highlighted unflatteringly by the white shirt. Too many simple carbs. I wonder if I can bike that off?

This is a work of beauty. I will give the Shiv a bit of a break though, since it's from 2009.

I didn't even notice them at first, but now that I went back and looked again, wow! I'm not sure what else is left to say about them.

Sorry to hear I guess you can get really hurt doing anything on two wheels, motor or no motor involved, right? I'm wearing a helmet now at least, and eventually I'll upgrade to a 'great' helmet.

I do centuries or close, twice a week. And almost that much in the winter too. My potbelly only gets smaller when I reduce calories. On one century I ate what I thought I should, the next day I gained three lbs !!! Really. More than once.

$40k salary, 2% commission, wear and tear on my own vehicle with only gas & oil change as coverage... maybe you will see me back at school for engineering. HA.

I had a case of the Mondays, now I'm just sad, oh boy.
