Albuterol, the [not so] PED

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Steroids, by contrast, reduce the chronic inflammatory state in the airway walls, which makes them prone to spasm in asthma. This is a slow, long-lasting process.
Of course you are right. The longer acting members of the Albuterol class are often combined with steroids like flutacasone IIRC. What I was thinking of was those other similar drugs that are used on a daily basis with or without steroid. Thanks for the correction.

It was a clarification, not a correction, then. Cheers.

What is interesting, when I was a kid only primatene was available. I didn't carry it around, it was at home for severe attacks. After all, you wouldn't be anywhere but at home if yer asthma was acting up! Back then, I would play basketball and have three attacks a game. No big deal. Sit on the bench for a bit, and my croup like cough was great for unnerving opponents free throw shots. Now it only happens well after harder exertion than I did back then, and I am likely to be enjoying my second post ride beer when it happens.

it took me a while to admit my childhood asthma was back, longer to figur out what works for my cycling.
