Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bont shoes in hot climates

Has anyone found the Bont Vaypor+ or Vaypor S comfortable in hot and humid climates? I live in Louisville, Kentucky. I love my Bont Vaypors most of the time, but now that it's 90+ most days, they are really hot. I'm wondering if either of the newer models are better ventilated. Does anyone know from firsthand experience?

I find my Bont zero plus to be comfortable all the time. Good ventilation under the sole and in the front toe. Colder weather is more of an issue like most shoes. Hot weather isn't an issue for me though

Thanks. Maybe I'm just picky? Am going to try thinner insoles and socks for tomorrow's ride. Supposed to be sweltering again. I have to say that my Vaypors don't feel ventilated in the least. No air moving through them, little flowing out.

I've done a double imperial century in my Vaypor+ and by the end every other body part except my feet were dying. Ventilation could be better; I miss the cooling sensation that my Shimanos provided with their sole vent, but the Bonts are tolerable in the heat.

In the wet is a different ball game. They're effectively bathtubs. Very poor drainage.

Go to target or similar store and get a pair of their really thin (and super cheap, like $1.50) foam inserts. Cut them to the size as you normally would. Them take a 1/4 drill bit and drill holes in them where the air vents are located in the arch and toe area. This will help with ventilation. Plus I prefer these insoles to the super cheap ones that come with the Bonts.

Thanks, I appreciate the suggestion. I'll give that a try. I gotta say that if you look closely at the "air vents" on Bonts, you might think differently about what they are doing. Compared to those on other shoes, they are not functioning in the same way. The interior lining of the Bonts covers the vents and makes their cooling effect minimal at best. Hold the shoes up to a light and look inside, you'll see what I mean.

I'll give your suggestion a try nonetheless. Can't hurt.

I'm not sure what model Bonts I got but I'm due west of you on I-64[eville]. My feet are always hot however most of my hot feet issues are due to me wearing dark socks while riding. The Bonts I got could use more ventilation.

Oh I know what you're referring to. The holes in the insoles helped me. I can certainly tell that I'm getting ventilation through my shoes. A hot days ride is gonna be a hot day in the saddle no matter what though. I guess if my feet are got, other parts of me are that hot as well and it's just part of the game.

Agreed. I may just be taking some time to adjust to hot weather. I didn't snug the straps down as tight as usual for the last couple of rides, and that definitely helped. Looking forward to doing the insole trick. Suggestion is definitely appreciated.
