Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's what rillettes du Perigord is made from. I also like duck's leg noodle soup in Vietnamese restaurants.

Duck is healthy as long as you avoid the fatty skin. The skinless meat is quite lean.

I'm about to press play on the last 95km of today's stage, so feel free to spoiler away!

Actually spoilers don't bother me much due to short term memory loss.

Really? I normally have no trouble not hearing about the tour. If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't even know it existed.

It's just not in the news, until maybe the very end.

Maybe ESPN, I don't know, it's only baseball left and I have little reason to tune in.

Facebook is different from the news. You're friends with people who are interested in the same stuff as you. And when something epic happens, people talk about it!

Yeah that's the difference, you're tuned into the bike scene, I'm not.

So spoilers work statistically just like everything else.

If you blab 10 minutes into the rebroadcast who wins, you are going to piss off X number of your friends (as you noticed last night).
If you wait 24 hours, you're going to piss off far fewer friends.
If you wait 48 hours, you're going to piss of practically no one.

Who do you want to be? Someone who pisses off a lot of your friends, a few of your friends, or none of your friends?

And the GoT scene.

Although stage 2 of the TDF was pretty swell, just watched it today. It's incredible, the endurance these guys have!

I think I need to unfollow Peter Sagan on Facebook. Literally flipped it on today, then checked facebook (like 10 minutes after the finish in the real world) to get it ruined by PS. Always blabbing about the results. Although I will admit to watching thinking "how the hell does that result happen with so few kilometers to go?" At least I was still wondering how it was going to happen the whole time.

What the F is wrong with that dude?! Always blabbing about races he was in! I never do anything like that on FB, I always wait at least 48 hours before I mention anything about my own races.

2 days afterwards it isn't even worth talking about anymore. Friends had better find a way to watch whatever they care about before the next morning.

Where does this idiocy come from? There is a sporting contest, but you aren't allowed to talk about it. Incredible. If someone cares, then they damn well better find a way to watch instead of blaming their problem on the folks who do.

The subtle difference here is that I'm not blaming him... I'm talking about me doing something about it, not him doing something about it.

The flip-side of this is that if someone really cares to discuss it, and there are established venues to do so, why not take the discussion there?

Addiction is our little playground, but there are obviously limits to what's appropriate and what's not. In this case, it's already been well established that it's a faux pas to discuss spoilers in the 41, so why not accept that part of the social contract, go to the appropriate forum/thread and comment away? Once you have the threads on your subscription page, what's the diff (besides not pissing off other members)?

The confusion comes from the way we mix all of this crap up in social media nowadays.

You can intentionally not go to a TDF news site... but a complete social media blackout is getting harder and harder to pull off. Should I ignore all of my friends kids pics and everything else that happens on facebook, etc... just because I watch a bike race?

But if you're subscribing to TDF news in your feed, it's your own damn fault. If you're participating in a non-TDF forum then different standards apply. I would say addiction is in the latter category.

It comes from the sticky warning thread at the top of the Road forum page. Looks much like this:

Sticky Posting Spoilers.....do NOT do it.

Oops - won another ebay auction on a plane. I really did need a low-angle block plane, though, and it was a decent price.

This is not a spoiler, as it has nothing to do with the results. There was some great road art out there today (at least the 10 year old in me thinks so):
