Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I will probably be super busy for a while ahead, as well. Only news from me lately is that I'm fat from pie, and I finally broke out the trainer.

Also, anyone have any experiences with knee meniscus surgery? Looks like my wife needs that, and so far our Gold insurance plan (which ends in a month) doesn't seem to cover ****. Had to pay cash for the MRI (that was my only black friday purchase). I'm bracing for what a surgery might cost.
I remember being worried about my meniscus after my knee injury (I was lucky and mine was near perfect). From what I recall, it depends on where the tear is due to the fact that some of that meniscus (closer to the edges) does see blood flow that can assist in healing and some of it gets basically no blood flow. The doctor/PT would be the best people to talk to about expected recovery once the results of the MRI are clear.

On the plus side, I would imagine the procedure itself would be minimally invasive with a good recovery time outside of the meniscus itself. They're really, really good at that stuff now. Should only be 2 or 3 very small incisions.

My FIL had it ages ago and they very foolishly told him he would probably never do things like skiing or cycling again. Don't know what they were smoking. He's done all of that and more since then.

If you attached dog whistles to your bike would it be a deterrent to dogs chasing you or would it promote it?

@jtaylor996 we have a nifty cost estimator I can use at work (insurance stuff). With an ICD code of S83.27 - Complex tear of lateral meniscus and a CPT code for an arthroscopic repair, it looks like the total medical costs including surgery would range between 20 and 30k. A lot depends on the provider and location. Hopefully she has a high deductible plan where 100% coverage kicks in after hitting that limit so you don't have to pay for the whole thing.

I was going to refinance my car and had everything set up with the loan company. Then as they were reviewing docs they decided the vehicle and I didn't qualify for a balance of $21,500 and they could only do $21,000.

They, oh so kindly, offered to let me reapply after I brought my current loan balance down. What a waste of my time! For them to look at their computers and see a disqualification that is smaller than one month's payment and not have the ability to push it up the ladder for an override is just silly.

...and come to think of it I overestimated the current loan balance. It's really closer to $21,300.

I wasn't even going to see a benefit to the refinance for years either since it was a larger payment and only a slightly lower rate. I wouldn't have seen the savings until the end when the payments stopped sooner than the current loan.

There are sites where rollovers are done by page count, rather than time. Might that make sense here?

Since it's not really causing any pain right now, she's just going to get a cortisone shot. She did that a few years back and the issue went away until recently. They don't know where the tear is, as the leaking fluid and inflamed tissue has made that part of the MRI fuzzy.

Who else is mostly a roadie, but , looking forward to riding snow and ice with fater tires on an MTB? It helps your power when spring comes. It improves your bike handling skills. It beats the carp out of rollers or trainers.

Refinance a car? I've never heard of that.

I think the most I've financed on a car is like ~$12k, though. Well, I suppose I owed more on the Porsche, but I paid that off after 1 month when my FL house finally sold. I got some ******** low rate on the minivan, like just over 3% (using a local teacher's credit union that we've used many times in the past).

I don't know that I can call myself mostly a roadie anymore... too much fun on the MTB lately. But still, I got the ol' zwift out recently since I can't get enough hours in on the trail in winter.

I have a crap rate on the loan currently. I've improved my credit a TON in the last 12 months.

I got the Langster for winter base miles.

When the roads get too sketchy for that, I have my CX bike.

Interval training with be done on an indoor trainer.

What I've seen online is that the average cost for these is about $8k. Of course, these things inflate about 10% a month, so the page I was looking at may not have today's costs.

She has an aetna gold plan, which I think has something like a $2k-4k deductible (can't remember), then 20% coinsurance after that. So, probably like $5k out of pocket. But since it's not causing pain we'll do the $50 shot for now.

I'll worry about surgery costs when we're shopping for whatever our next insurance nightmare will be.

Anyone remember a thread on the 41 from a year or two ago about a guy custom-painting his Specialized TT bike with Red Bull Racing F1 colors? I'm trying to find a picture of his completed bike and the forum search function is teh sux.
