Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Floor pump suggestions

I am seriously dissatisfied with my Lezyne Hi Pressure floor pump. The speed chuck pops off and the thread chuck pulls the barrel out of the valve stem. Pls share your recommendations.

I have a Specialize Air Tool from 2005 (?) Love it!

I bought a Lezyne STEEL floor pump. Pumps well but the gauge is not very accurate. FYI, put shoes on before inflating tires. I did one morning and the pump slipped out of my hands and got a pretty good whack on the toes along with a few cuts. Sucker is heavy.

Had a Joe Blow, piece of junk. Spring at the bottom kept breaking.

My Topeak Joe Blow Sprint has never failed me. I used the Schrader side of the head with my commuter bike, now I use the Presta side for my road bike.

We have a few Joe Blows at work, where tons of people commute by bike. They take a ton of abuse and last for few years anyway.

I have one too and agree with your assessment.

I bought this replacement chuck: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SJZ27M

And it's a lot better. I still hold it on while I pump, but it has been a huge improvement.

Probably weird and random, but I got a cannondale branded pump not too long ago that I really like. The head pops on and off both valve types quite well.

its hard to find a better pump, and the store will replace it(or offer store credit) if you are unsatisfied.

I was also frustrated with those chucks. I bought their new ABS-2 chuck which (so far) works like a charm. May be worth considering as the new chuck will cost much less than a new pump.

Weird. I sort of assumed that it was a newer slip chuck that the OP was complaining about (as in your link). I have the older version of that pump, with the type of chuck that you literally have to twist onto the valve stem to engage, so it would seems quite impossible to "pop off the thread".

I've got a Bontrager Turbocharger that I like quite a bit. Don't know if it's a re-brand or what, but it has replaceable internals and and a head that auto-fits Schrader and Presta valves with no muss or fuss (handy for the wife's and kid's bikes).

The best and most durable pump I've used is the Specialized Airtool Comp. It has a big barrel and pumps to 150. Even comes with a spare rubber grommet which I've taped to the barrel.

Yeah, I believe he was talking about that one.. I had that one, originally, as well.. It was awful. Well, for schraeder valves, it was okay, but at this point, only my kid's bike has those and she's riding the wife's road bike more and more anyway.. The slip-chuck supplied with the pump was essentially like the one I linked to except it was made of black plastic which quickly degraded with regular use.

The screw-on thing tended to unscrew removable valve cores while unscrewing.... OP experienced it, so have I. Terrible design.

It's a pity, too, as the pump LOOKS great.

In addition to the chuck problems, I find that the amount of air it pushes per stroke seems pretty pathetic. I tried a buddy's floor pump once and was (ahem) floored at how quickly it pumped.

ABS2 seems like the way to go. Looks pretty sweet on the video.

I suggest the Nashbar L'Orange
Nashbar L'Orange V.2 Floor Pump - G.O.T.D. April 2013 - Bicycling Magazine
$40. They have 20% off quite often.

The chuck on my Lezyne floor pump is slip on. Works great but you only slip it in about an eighth of an inch. If you slip it on more than that, good luck getting it off. The instructions do state this but I didn't read them the first time. Now I know!

I have a 15 yr old silica pista that I rather like, but sadly these original Italian workhorses have been discontinued and lately reintroduced as a blinged out version for about $7,000 .../s
I also have a Nashbar Earl Gray Pump I keep upstate with my other bike, that is a very capable for not much money.

I was going too mention my Velowurks pump but I checked Bike Tires Direct and it's no longer available there. It is a nice pump although the pump head is a little strange. I may swap it out for a single valve type head. It's been a good pump as far as reliability and efficiency. Pumps up quick and it's really nicely detailed not Silica $400 nice but it's nice. Edit:Looks like it's out there, even Walmart sells it.

I have an apparently bomb-proof Nashbar Ultimate pump which could easily be 20 years old; I have no recollection of when I got it anymore. I dunno if L'Orange or Earl Grey are built the same (mine has a dual valve hole, autoselecting lever-lockhead), but I wouldn't hesitate to try one of those for the money based on my experience with their pumps.

I actually have a Taggio Pro pump head on it now, which works quite handily, though the hose clamp is awkward. I'd like to have a better, less coarse looking way to secure the barb in the hose, but maybe the newer ones have addressed this, I dunno.
