Iirc the last refresh was in 2013(?). What is the typical Shimano cycle? Maybe something to consider if a new bike purchase is on the horizon in the next year or so.

The usual cycle is 1 year for Ultegra and 2 years for 105 after Dura Ace, which just came out.

Find the next numbers in the following sequence:

Dura ace 7900 2008, ultegra 6700 2009, 105 5700 2011

Dura ace 9000 2012, ultegra 6800 2013, 105 5800 2014

Dura Ace 9100 2016, ...

The only thing I want from 9100 is the front der, which is cheap enough....

The crank looks sick though but at around $600, I would probably just buy another bike haha

i wonder if 105 di2 will be the next evolution of the breed.

My understanding is the change to D-A was quite modest (not counting the integrated PM), so I would also be expecting minimal changes for the other lines. Stay tuned.

Beyond styling (which, admittedly, sells a lot of components), what is there to "trickle down?" Current Ultegra and 105 are pretty close to flawless -- and 105 is an amazing bargain. These will only be cosmetic upgrades.

The only thing left to do is to bring back biopace.

DI2 positron?

I think it will be DI2 on 105. And for all groups, continued improvement on brifter shape for disc. They improved it on 105… but not enough. Though I think hybrid may be the way, get same shape as mechanical but still get hydraulic benefit.

For Ultrega will be disc specific groupset. Right now it is a frankenstein group of Ultrega and generic disc parts. So all Ultrega with 9100 trickle down maybe next year.

If I'm going to own a crank that is glued together, it's going to be made of carbon.

I've never ridden DA so I don't have a first hand comparison, but many have said Praxis chainrings shift as well as DA. And they are coming out with a carbon crankset.

IIRC, Praxis and Shimano are the only two chainring manufacturers that are cold forging their rings.
