Wow, I love the steel bikes. Had a blue one in the '80s. No idea what kind.

Yes. TimeMachine 01 Di2. In for some quick adjustments.

I would've gotten the black one personally.

What distance tri does the owner race? Hydration system- it just looks wrong to me.

I know for sure he does sprints and halfs. He may also do full IMs, can't remember.

Hydration...

... triathletes are weird.

I'm still trying to figure out why it needs Di2 adjustments. I thought Di2 was perfect or so the 41 has led me to believe.

As for aesthetics, I'll button it, too, though it's not any worse than a few other tri-bikes that I've seen go through my LBS.

What's the black box behind the seatpost for?

For the hidden motor? I see now...

Snacks, tools, etc for training rides.

But in races, those boxes often serve as legal fairings. It is almost certainly aero.

That Profile Design hydration system is actually very aero- when it's mounted upside down and far lower than it is (rendering it useless of course). People put them on their aerobars as legal fairings, fitter has talked to me about it. Thankfully it won't fit on my bike- too big!

WhyFi 05-11-17 06:19 AM

For a bike that looks like it was designed to be super aero, it sure has a bunch of **** hanging off of it.

datlas 05-11-17 06:21 AM

I believe that BMC as pictured, is NOT UCI legal. If you remove the "trunk" behind the saddle I think it is.

BTW, I was scanning the postings from yesterday, and there seems to be a bit of discontinuity about a certain banned visitor to Addiction. Were a few postings actually deleted? I don't know that it was all that controversial, but who knows what the man/woman behind the curtain is doing??

Heathpack 05-11-17 06:26 AM

WhyFi datlas, UCI legal is not a term that applies to Tri, since that's not their governing body

However the appendages on this bike are very likely designed to be aero- well the box behind the seat tube is. And it's legal for sure. That's one of the few ways to get a fairing legally onto your bike.

The hydration system is also legal and it *could* be aero. It's just not mounted in a place where it is aero.

WhyFi 05-11-17 06:34 AM

Yeah, I'm just looking at the water bottle, some of the wiring and the Di2 control box (or whatever) hanging under the stem - just doesn't look tidy. Also surprised that the front brake caliper isn't tucked behind the fork or something, but I don't have the aero eye-test expertise that Solo claimed to possess.

Trsnrtr 05-11-17 06:35 AM

My LBS sells Giant and Specialized tri-machines and they are somewhat similar with lots of removable parts and knick knacks.

On the Giant, most of the stuff is in the front and the Shiv is down by the BB.

WhyFi 05-11-17 06:44 AM

Yesterday morning, I thought that it would be a great idea to pull and clean my BB before heading out on a ride (it was crick-cricking after the wet gravel ride). For ~20 miles is was blissfully quiet.... and then it tick-tick-ticked for the remaining 45 miles. Guess I should have been more generous with the grease. :o

I didn't say we were adjusting the Di2. :)

However, the guy also had some questions about the Di2; indicator lights and charging. He's never had a bike with Di2 before.

Understood that UCI legal does not apply to tris, but it does apply to TTs. So one keeps the aero trunk if doing a tri, and removes it if doing a (possibly UCI sanctioned) TT. I believe that most big manufacturers are making TT/Tri bikes that have both options, which makes sense.

No you don't need to remove the box for a UCI-sanctioned race. UCI does not consider it a fairing if it has a purpose on the bike (like storage). Trek's Speed Concept also has a similar box in some models. It's a positive for TTists, as it doesn't matter if you use the box or not. It's legal to be there and was likely designed to improve aerodynamics (I have read for sure about this in the case of the BMC in question, but that's the scoop for other bikes that do this). The box is probably removable but since it's designed to be aero, you wouldn't remove it for a TT.

Please excuse my ignorance, but does that thing have a rear brake?
