Momorial Day (USA)... who rode?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Double out-and-back that ended up around 42 miles. Tried the pop-tarts diet during the ride. I think my legs hate me now (forgot to mention; hill repeats yesterday, though I think I need a bigger hill).

Saturday commute to work 13.5 miles, round trip. Sunday A.M. ride 13.5 miles @ 16.8 mph in 46 minutes. This morning, same 13.5 miles @ 17 mph in approx. 46 minutes. Met wife at work for lunch. 10.7 miles round trip. Pop tarts, granola bars, steak, mashed potatoes, 3 hot dogs, 1 hamburger, ice cream, about 20 Hershey kisses, and 1 big stomach ache!

Of course I was not going to go out and ride with the slower riders... so I went out with the fast group, most who did not ride Sunday
Ok, m58, this is totally meant to be constructive. What i read right here is a bad idea, not only for someone who has problems outside of the normal man, but for anyone. If you're tired, ride slow, if you feel good ride fast. Riding fast when you should ride slow will not make you a better or stronger rider, it can just lead to overtraining and frustration that you train with these guys but you can't race with them. All good riders take easy days, and in general, it is a bad idea to tack two hard days on in a row unless you feel fresh for the second, even then it is questionable.

I'd just suggest fewer group rides, while the skills learned are valuable, the pressures both physical and psychological involved are not necessarily good for you when encountered too often. Just my two cents.

35 ish miles today which was supposed to be the "recovery ride" from yesterday's 120 miler. Ofcourse when me and my buddies ride things get incrementally faster as the ride progresses so I'm in more pain now then after the Century.

I'll need a recovery ride tomorrow...

Rode to George Washington's house in Mt. Vernon. Nice ride. Hilly though.

20 miles, and it started raining when I was leaving. I didn't care. I have been stuck inside for two days due to the weather, and I ended up babying my Trek with a thorough cleaning when we got back. I am still increasing my miles little by little to get ready for my centuries in August.

Thank you to any veterans who may be reading, and I give them thanks whenever I meet them.

Agreed... I was supose to go out and race Long Beach this morning but my parents said they had to work so I did not register... the group ride was the best thing to that. I certainly did not want to go riding alone again...

(That is why I rarely ride Saturday and Sunday both day group rides)...

No riding at all after my distance PR of 50 on Saturday.
Upper body work at the weekend lake house....pier in, boat lift in, cut grass, sawed huge tree limbs up, BBQ'd Italian sausages, which were consumed with watermelon, chips, cupcakes...yum.

Time to get back to real world now--not work--CYCLING.
Next goal--Sunday is the big Miller Lite Ride for the Arts here in Milwaukee. I am going to do the 50-mile loop this year. Last year I did the 25. Thousands of riders in this thing, so goal number one is be safe. Goal number two....now that I have done 50 on my own in 15.5 average, I want to best that average speed PR in the event.

Full report and some pix will be posted.

Bruce .. did you get on the bike path at all? i was on it just through Venice, and even though it was only about 9:00 it was full of sand and slow people. i cut down Speedway to Neilsen to Ocean because it was so scary. Did the San Vicente, Montana, 26th loop three times, and then went back home on BUNDY. It was a lot less scary than Ocean Avenue and the bike path!!

Ok I'm sorry, but its killing me to see this thread pop up to the top over and over again with "Memorial" horribly misspelled. Is this not hurting anyone else's eyeballs?

58, you're obviously a relatively smart guy, I've seen some of the math stuff you've posted. But for the love of god please invest in a dictionary.

Did 77 on Friday with a fast group with a few good climbs, 40 by myself on Saturday on rolling hills, 20 on Sunday, with a steep climb that I always wanted to do, but I didn't make it. And then today another 73 where we were cruising for a while at 25-26mph and blasting over the rolling hills. 210 miles over 4 days.

I woke up Saturday morning thinking I overdid it on Friday, but once I got going I was OK. Sunday was purely recovery, and this morning I woke up thinking that if I couldn't keep up with the group I'll just drop off the back. But I felt better today than the first three once I got going. I'd have done another thirty but time ran out.

after my first 50 yesterday I wanted to do a 15 to stretch the muscles and figure out which muscles are actually sore... Unfortunately came down with a case of the runs.. Bad bar food from yesterday... Managed to do 5 miles... I started late, it was getting dark and I didnt have a headlight.. Logged 90 miles over the weekend... Oh the part that's sore is my butt and some muscles close by..

I've been off the bike for about 7 weeks, MRI showed a herniated disc and some other "bulging" discs. Almost all of the pain has subsided, so Sunday I took a quick 8 mile ride to feel things out. It felt pretty good, so today I did a 24 mile loop and it felt even better. I was about 3 mph faster than my average --- I think due to the fact it was so nice to be back on the bike, so the adrenalin was plentiful. I got done w/ the ride just in time to beat the rain. This was the 6th weekend in a row w/ rain on each day, so at least I haven't been missing a lot of good riding weather!

Did about 46 miles: 13 round trip to a 33 mile recovery ride with a group riding out of Sag Harbor, NY. Yesterday's ride was a bit longer and a LOT faster (read: harder).

Weather was fabulous! Great great riding on some beautful roads with little traffic and a good group.

28 miles on the new Giant OCR 3 I got yesterday. It is great, took awhile to get the seat like I wanted it, but it rides like a dream. I upgraded the wheels to some Ritchey WCS Protocols.

Did 25 yesterday on an absolutely perfect day and 30 today to beat the rain home. After not riding for a week, it felt great! Now I'm off the bike for another week, damn.

i stayed off the bike path completely. i usually take side streets from the marina area till i get to ocean ave. then take that up to san vicente.
i do ride on path fairly often but NEVER on sundays (or memorial day mondays!).i also avoid the section thru venice proper, which is pretty much always crowded and slow.

35 Saturday, 46 yesterday. 36 today. Ran 4 miles after the 46 mile ride for tri training.

Now that's alot of hours. Am I the only one who feels guilty about leaving the fam - and a few required chores - for that long?

Went to the beach this weekend with the family(Ocean Isle, NC)....and took along the new Trek 1200. I managed nice solo rides on saturday and sunday. The sun was shining and temps in mid 80's.... Yes I managed some great tan lines during the rides. Ocean Isle is a small island accesible by bridge. Our family beach house is located on the island within walking distance from the ocean. I can lap the island three times in 1.5 hours. There's lots of activity on the island...cars coming and going, people crossing the roads heading to the surf, joggers, etc......so you have to stay on alert while riding the bike. Occasionally I'll ride over the bridge to get off the island. This is a great way to get away from the crowds and the buzz of the island. The island offers a nice change from the roads around my home(35 miles inland from Ocean Isle)...which are quiet country roads with lots of tobacco fields, cow pastures, pine trees, churches, etc. It's nice though at Ocean Isle...you can do a 2 hour ride ...then put up the bike, grab a cooler with your favorite beverage,..and head over to sit on the surf and soak up the sun. I'll be there for 10 days in July. Can't wait. No cable or internet though. I'll have to follow the Tour de France with the ABC sports weekend updates and via USA Today.

I rode ...... INTO WORK still better than not riding! 26 miles
The whole family (4 kids - ages 2 (in trailer) 5 (tag along) 8 and 11 (own bikes) rode the "Bike the drive" in Chicago, on Sunday. They closed Lake Shore Drive to cars for a couple of hours and let the bikes run. It was a great time doing it again next year!
