Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Momorial Day (USA)... who rode?

Alright many of us had today off from work, etc. Who went out and rode today?

I did... 48 miles down the Riverside (Santa Ana River beach trail) with the local bike club. Let me say that it was a mistake going out with the group I did but it went well in the end. Yesterday I did 65 miles (quite hard miles) and was tired this morning. Of course I was not going to go out and ride with the slower riders... so I went out with the fast group, most who did not ride Sunday.

The beach trail is a relativly flat trail that runs down to Hunington Beach in So Cal. The challenges include the little steep underpass things and the technical nature of the trail... plus it is multiuse. Many racers train out there and today was no exception. At the start I felt good, cranking away in a 23 MPH paceline with the group through this technical trail, slowed down by the occasional walker and slow rider. I refused to touch the big ring (working on spin right now) so it was quite interesting spining at 130 RPMs in front of a paceline . About mile 14 though I started feeling weak. Due to my condition I can not go out and ride like that 2 days in a row without major rest (I.e. 12+ hours of sleep plus active recovery). I ended up slipping off the back and right at the beach I sat on the side of the trail for sometime. My legs felt great but my body felt weak. It is a feeling that most people will not ever feel unless they are real sick.

After a run to starbucks we headed back, a big readout of cadence flashed a 90 RPM average as I spun away at 18 - 19 MPH. On the way back I meet up with another rider from the club and we rode in about 17 MPH. By this time my neck started bothering me (normal due to neck injury, happens on comfort bikes too) and my calve was acting up. My body got weaker and weaker but I made it in right between two groups, average 17 MPH.

I rode 115 miles in two days... I am ready to get some good quality recovery time...

So what did you all ride today?

2.2 miles to the gym, then, 2.5 to get a haircut (closed as i thought), 1.1 to ace hardware for a saw blade, then .5 to the coffee shop to get a latte and watch the overcast skies and drizzle, then .2 back home.

a completely predictable and mundane day, but a perfect ride!

Well, not too impresive, but I might do more. I rode a few miles with my parents, but my mom's new bike has some chain/chainring issues (it skips, but doesn't slip gears). Plus, she's been laid up at home for about a month now and is way out of shape. My dad was doing fine, slow, but keeping a good pace. He was riding really cautiously due to a lack of helmet (3 bikes + 2 helmets = upset parents...). Neither one of them is very experienced on a bike, but at least I got them out. I'm hoping to do some more solo today, but who knows.

55 miles total from Chapel Hill to Mebane? and back. I was going to ride a better route but I lost my cue sheet to the wind early on when I reached in my jersey pocket for a snack. I didn't realize it until a couple of miles later so I just rode until I came to an expressway and turned around.

The highlight of my day? Being flicked off and yelled at by a jerk and his girlfriend (the driver) in some kind of cr@p neck car. The same car then came up behind me a few minutes later (they obviously had turned around), passed me right in front of an oncoming dump truck, then immediately slammed on their brakes and turned right into a driveway. Quality people.

Nice day though.

Rode 27 miles today and a total of 81 for the weekend - beautiful weather all three days. I'm also going to ride tomorrow after work which will put me over 100 miles.

A whopping 2.4 miles to and fro a local park. But I was carrying the trailer with my girls, so that's like, what, 3 regular miles?

Hoping to put in some more miles after wifey returns from work.

Wish I could. Had a bad crash yesterday, so I have nice road rash on my knee, elbow, chin, and hip. Plus, a broken ring finger nail, and many other small scratches.

The bike could be in better shape. Finished truing the rear wheel after rim replacement, now just need to put on rim tape, tube+tire, and replace the bar tape. She should be up and running tonight. But it looks like I'm going to have to take a break for at least a week, maybe two.

About 55 Sat. and 53 Sunday. DROVE Miata (car) to Tour of Somerville and spectated a bit before going to grocery store. Roast on the grill, Riesling in hand - life is good!

Rode 196 miles Saturday and Sunday. Felt like taking Memorial Day off and spending it with the family. Plus, there was no way in hell I could sit on a saddle and pedal another day like was originally planned. We were supposed to do 300 miles in 3 days. I was only able to prepare for the 2 weeks prior with any consistency.

Fell way short. Next year, I'll be ready 8^)

Why ride when you can race? We had the TX state championship crits today, a crit yesterday, and one Saturday as well. Hell of a weekend of racing.

Nope - instead major garage cleaning and purging in order to be better able to store the bikes! You know - going through the boxes we moved from the last house without opening since the PREVIOUS move!! How pathetic is that! My new goal is to live more simply in order to feel free to ride and enjoy other activities, but there's a lot of decluttering that has to happen before then.

Got a ride in, but got caught in a thunderstorm/downpour so I had to cut it short since the temperature dropped and I couldn't really see the road due to the amount of precipitation. Not really sure how many miles, need to get a computer this week.

It was a recovery day for me, and my legs made sure of that. I rode 9 miles round trip to care for a friend's cats while she's out of town, then did a "real ride" of just 30 miles. I felt agonizingly slow on some stretches but decided it was best to listen to my legs and spin easy.

(My man took a good long ride Saturday -- don't know the mileage but he was gone almost 5 hours -- raced 40-some miles yesterday, rode 63 today...)

Rode to Romeoville from my house in Joliet today for a total of a little over 33 miles. Weather was beautiful. (Sunny 70F) One day last week, I rode to Mokena / Frankfort area (using sections of the Old Plank Rd. Trail). Did 48 miles on that ride (most in one day).
