Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After doing the Davis Double last Sat I was hurting a little this weekend.

Did 58 miles on Sat, cruzing with an 18.5 ave.

Did 78 miles Sun on tandem with 5500 ft of climbing.

Did 50 miles flat on Mon with an 18.5 ave.

431 miles in last 10 days, needless to say I'm taking a break. =)

I was out on the Santa Ana River Trail too-did a nice out and back totaling 32.5 miles. I couldn't believe how crowded it was in spots-the worst was "family rides" that took up the whole trail....and parents that couldn't seem to understand that they should really pay attention to their kids....only a few near misses and one parent screaming because we told her kid to stay to the right please.....Saw a bunch of club riders on the trail. Overall, it was quite pleasant-wish I had rode farther.

I did 36 miles fixed on Friday (with one flat ) Didn't ride Saturday morning in the rain. Spent Sunday with my wife. Rode 42 Monday. Looking forward to next ride. May take it a little easier this week as I'm doing a century next Sunday.

Not many miles over the weekend, but got in some quality cross training up at the Lake with the kidlets, the dog, and Mrs. Caloso.

Saturday I ran 3 miles with the dog and the kids in the jogger. Climbed up Dollar Hill above Tahoe City. I have no idea what the incline was, but it hurt. Heck, it hurt to come down, especially making sure that the jogger didn't get away from me.

Sunday, took a very mellow 12 mile ride down the Truckee River MUT with the wife. I rode the beater and resisted every temptation to make "suggestive comments" about my wife's cadence, gear selection, etc. Just spun along and enjoyed her company like we were on a date.

Monday, long trail run through the woods behind N. Tahoe H.S. with Khiva the Wonder Dog. We were the only ones out there and it felt like we could have run for days. A man and his faithful mutt bounding over the rocks and trees. A wonderful thing.

Not on Memorial Day. My favorite route from my house takes me by two popular state park lakes. They are always real busy on memorial day, so I avoided all the extra traffic. I did ride 40 on saturday and 52 on Sunday.

When I was in the navy we often didn't go out on New Years Eve or St. Patricks Day. We considered them amateur nights. I guess national holiday weekends tend to be the same on bikes. Particularly on the road or city park paths.

On Memorial Day , I discovered that my old city-slicker tires on my old GT Karakoram can make it to the top of the wooded trails at the in-laws' place up in Michigan. Woulda/shoulda/coulda brought the treads, but didn't know I'd be off roading it with my brother-in-law.... Descending with slick tires on the trails was a test to say the least.... can't wait to get the real tires on next time.... I'll bring the roadie, too, just in case they want to go out for a spin on the pavement.....

Great day/weekend it was to ride!!

Kept up my tradition of the solo century on Memorial day. Improved my time by 40 minutes this year despite adding climbing and 6 miles. Went from Mesa to Florence jct, to Florence, Coolidge, Chandler, Gilbert, and back to Mesa making a big loop around the SanTan mountains. I originally started this tradition as Memorial day is one of the last days before the heat gets bad down here so it is possible to get a mostly enjoyable century in if you leave real early in the morning. If I improve as much over the next year as I did over the last I will be able to sleep in until sunrise next year! Temps were in the mid 90's when I finished at 10 incidentally. Last year it was over 100 when I finished.

I did... 48 miles down the Riverside (Santa Ana River beach trail) with the local bike club. Let me say that it was a mistake going out with the group I did but it went well in the end. Yesterday I did 65 miles (quite hard miles) and was tired this morning. Of course I was not going to go out and ride with the slower riders... so I went out with the fast group, most who did not ride Sunday.

The beach trail is a relativly flat trail that runs down to Hunington Beach in So Cal. The challenges include the little steep underpass things and the technical nature of the trail... plus it is multiuse. Many racers train out there and today was no exception. At the start I felt good, cranking away in a 23 MPH paceline with the group through this technical trail, slowed down by the occasional walker and slow rider. I refused to touch the big ring (working on spin right now) so it was quite interesting spining at 130 RPMs in front of a paceline . About mile 14 though I started feeling weak. Due to my condition I can not go out and ride like that 2 days in a row without major rest (I.e. 12+ hours of sleep plus active recovery). I ended up slipping off the back and right at the beach I sat on the side of the trail for sometime. My legs felt great but my body felt weak. It is a feeling that most people will not ever feel unless they are real sick.

After a run to starbucks we headed back, a big readout of cadence flashed a 90 RPM average as I spun away at 18 - 19 MPH. On the way back I meet up with another rider from the club and we rode in about 17 MPH. By this time my neck started bothering me (normal due to neck injury, happens on comfort bikes too) and my calve was acting up. My body got weaker and weaker but I made it in right between two groups, average 17 MPH.

I rode 115 miles in two days... I am ready to get some good quality recovery time...

So what did you all ride today?
yep I rode 6:00 Am with my cousin and his wife on their tandem

Did about 17.12 miles aved 15 (if I didnt slow down as much for stops it would def be 18.) I was going to go straight home and I wouldnve done about 9 miles but I took a detour that my cousin showed me and it was great. Hardly any cars, perfect roads, wild life all around me. It was great, on that section I just got on my drops and just went, I was at least doing 21 mph because my mind wandered and I would just pedaled. Felt really great. Well then I went home, I liked it. Then sadly later in the day I marched. IT SUCKED!!!! base drum, horrible mount, friggin hot, coulndt feel my arm. When I would try to adjust the drum to make it more comfy, it was soo imprinted into my skin it would hurt to move it. Well i would say thats two workouts in a day. SCHWEET!

143 miles solo on Friday going from Wilmington, DE to Mount Holly Springs, PA (see my thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/road-cycling/110483-longest-solo-ride-into-headwind.html ) and 37 miles solo on Monday going from Collegeville, PA back to Wilmington. The ride into work today seemed so short.

It was a glorious Memorial day weather-wise here...did about 35 miles and took the camera with me to catch some of the beauty of the area. If anyone's interested, you can see some of the photos here

They're taken around the Oriskany Monument. Dedicated to those who lost their lives in one of the bloodiest battles of the Revolutionary War in 1777.

20 miles for me as part of the Macon Triathlon I completed. I did my 20 miles decked out in my USA flag jersey to honor those that paid the ultimate price for serving our great nation.

i got about 70 miles in. it wasn't as scenic a route as i had hoped, but it was long and hilly, which is just what the doctor ordered for my lazy butt. mostly through residential areas and downtown districts, but there was a good amount of countryside mixed in.

4200ft of climbing.
