I’m looking to upgrade the wheelset on my CAAD8, the stock Maddux ones feel very flexible and in the past I’ve had some issues with the rim separating at the seam (on a different bike).

I like to climb more than anything, and durability is very important to me.

Open to options, I’m assuming you get what you pay for to a certain extent, the only wheels I’ve found “so-so” reviews on are the Aksiums, the rest seem tried and true.

I have Fulcrum 5 LGs which I'm happy with for weight vs $, they climb, are stiff and roll well enough (I'm 158lb). With Fulcrum you might consider the wider LG versions (23mm) if you plan on running 25+ tires. I also have a set of the Quattro LGs which I like as well-slightly heavier and deeper aero profile, they also climb and accelerate very nicely.

The other wheels you listed are all well-reputed though, except maybe the Askiums, which may be a bit of a linear upgrade from your current wheels.

Fulcrum Racing 3 or 6800.

I had a set of FR5s just last year before selling them for an upgrade. Great set of alu wheels. Not sure with your budget if you could possibly make a wrong decision, barring the Mavics. Although, I'd certainly lean towards the lighter ones for your climbing tastes. I'm sure you're looking for more substantial information here, but what I can say is that the FR5 spokes were a reason I ended up selling before one actually broke; they're expensive to replace.

If you want to compare apples to apples, Fulcrum Racing 3 are essentially the same wheel as the Campy Zonda.

I have the Ultegras and really like them.

Easton EA90 SLX, clinchers. I've had these wheels for years with zero problems. 1400g, about the same price point you've been looking at.

This. You should spend a little more to get sub - 1400g wheels, especially if climbing is your thing.

I had a set of Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels that I used for 2 years without any issue. They are the best all around $300 wheelset you will find. I recently upgraded and gave them to my son to replace his stock wheelset. Shop around as you can find the FR3 on sale all the time.
