Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Back in high school I had a second hand black t-shirt with white print on it that said "Vermont Ain't Flat" and the outline of the state. It was so grunge.

Nothing worse than the air in Guadalajara where the Mexican-built VWs roam. Stenchy.

Not flat.

I tell people I never met a hill I did not like....with one exception, that being Smuggler's Notch Northbound, I had to turn around it was so steep.

One of my old monthly clients at the CPA firm bought a motorcycle last week. Closing the deal in the books right now.

****'s too long to watch. I would disappointed if they didn't get into relativity, where like you can see more than 50% of the surface of the sun at once. Probably true to a smaller extent for earth as well.

The only thing I know about "Nebraska" is what I heard on the Springsteen album. I still think that is his best work.

The scout came back after a day and told Custer he had some good news and he had some bad news.

Custer asked for the bad news first.

The scout said "There are a million warriors over the hill, and they will be attacking soon."

Custer said "With news like that, what possible good news can there be?"

"We don't have to go back through Nebraska" replied the scout.

We also sail and our most common destination is an offshore island with few paved roads. We're heading over next weekend, so I'll roam around on the mountain bike. We have a trip to Tahoe next month and will be bringing three bikes- road, mountain and TT.

Mostly I'm a time trialist these days, although cycling seems to be something of an evolution for me. I started with endurance riding. Now TTs. And lately a bit more mountain biking.
My whole fitness workouts have been an evolution. I started out running, graduated to inline skating and now cycling seems to be the thing I do most. Although with this broken wrist I'm having to keep myself happy walking. I've been told 6 weeks off the skates and bike. I see the dr in another week for cast and stitches removal. Then another cast for about 4 weeks. I'm hoping it won't be that long.

I'd be on the indoor trainer.

If I had one. I have a treadmill, a rowing machine and weights. No trainer. I'm thinking I may have to go to spin classes. Once I get the stitches out And the plaster cast off things should be better.

Definitely. Make sure it is a reasonably top-line event -- the pros can do amazing things with their cars. Heart-in-mouth stuff most of the time.

George Custer's direct descendant, also named George Custer, was a fiddle instructor of mine for a while. He was retired and lived in the Ocala nat'l forest on a house up on stilts, with a sign on the front that said "Custer's last stand".

What is broken on your wrist?

I broke mine when I first started cycling, and ended up in a brace and kept riding anyways. I had a distal scaphoid fracture that wasn't very bad, though. They wanted to cast it, but I didn't let them (was gigging as a fiddle player at the time, and I had some dates I didn't want to miss). I didn't need any pins/screws though, so probably not as bad as yours.

Still, "feeling it" didn't completely go away for like a damn year.

Hmm, never sniffed the engine compartment of a VW.

Wait, I had a '76 Rabbit and come to think of it, it did smell roughly the same.

The joint and the arm. 2 breaks. Just after surgery I thought he told me 20 pins but I was pretty loopy. I know I've got pins and Plate for sure. It's possible he said 20 stitches. I'll find out august 1. I can't use my wrist at all. Even jarring it causes major pain.
