Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry about your grandfather. It must be a refusal to relive trauma that makes veterans mute about the war(s). I know several Viet Nam guys who won't talk about that either, you'd just never know.

Only way I found out was via his obituary.
My father who was a door gunner in the 101st airborne will talk about some stuff but not about others.

We rode day one of our men-supported ladies ride today. Beautiful route that’s not possible without SAG. Zero facilities on 95% of the route and certainly no water. So the men drove SAG and the women rode (hey, that division of Labor was their idea).

Such a beautiful route, we rode through Lockwood Valley north of LA, then along Mt Rose Highway to a little town called Ojai, northeast of LA. Open high dry meadows with sagebrush and wildflowers. Dry mountains and some piney forested mountains. Very little traffic. Sweet ride. 60 miles, 3000 ft climbing and 7500 feet of descending. Dogz came with.

Here is my wheel. It is a mavic open pro with an Ultegra hub. That is a first for me. I run 105 or less in my low budget world that I live in.

My grandfather was in the Navy in WW2 and never spoke of any experiences.

I see that Pirelli has released a tubeless road tire. I'll have to keep an eye out for full-on reviews (only short hands-on reviews out there right now and all were conducted with tubes ). That they're being marketed as "armored" is not encouraging, but it's said that they rolled pretty well (and this was with tubes, remember) and had very good grip, so maybe cause for optimism.
