Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The is the second time I have had a problem with Avis. The first time they charged me for two days when I only had the car for less than 24 hrs.

Holy crap! Just looked at the original reservation summary I had Avis email me again. The base rate was $260. So they did charge me for two days again.

I never heard of this, unless the ship sank. They don't mention it on the videos about the glories of the mega freighters.

$260 to drive across the state? You probably could have ridden the train for less.

Long sleeve Jersey and windbreaker with bib shorts for today's ride. Topping out at 70 degrees. Gorgeous blue skies abound. It is sweater vest season.

It's not always about money. There is no train that goes where I was going, much less one that allows bikes. Not only that, a train ride from Philly to Pittsburgh is close to 8 hrs. these days, assuming it's on time.

Big enough SUV that I could toss the bike right in the back with all my gear. That's how I roll.

It didn't take very long looking at 15 passenger rental vans before I decided we should just buy a used van for the move from Rock Springs to PHX.

There's a station in Alliance. Close enough. And you can take bikes on the train.

Would you buy a van to ride across Pennsylvania?

For me, mowing season is ending but leaf season is just starting. Since I use the mower for leaves I don't really notice much of a difference.

Uncorrect.

1. It's not close enough, and the arrival time at Alliance is 1:39 a.m. assuming on time arrival.

2. It's very hard to get your bike to PGH to get the Capitol Limited from there. The Pennsylvanian from PHL to PGH does not allow bikes. Ergo, you have to go from PHL to D.C. on one of the few trains that allows bikes and then catch the Capitol Limited. The Vermonter is, of course, off the table because it arrives in D.C. long after the Capitol Limited departs.

Other than all that, your suggestion to save a few hundred bucks, if that, sounds just perfect. Have you ever given any thought to becoming a travel planner?

Dunno. I remember going to Wilkes-Barre once, and that's as far west in PA I've ever gone.

Uh oh. Saturn blew out two rusty brake lines.

Broken car brake lines are more $$ than bicycle brake cables.

Sad!

My snow is actually sticking and that's odd considering it was 87-88Ί on Monday.
