Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kidding aside, I am agreeable to occasional routine maintenance and modest cost repairs. A large repair (eg >800) is likely going to be a deal breaker.

Next question....Civic or Fit??
We bought a Fit specifically for its bike hauling capabilities. A single road bike goes in easily, wheels and all. If you take them off, you can put a passenger in the back seat.

The newer Hondas have a sport option, where you can pretend it's a standard. I can't speak negatively enough about their six speed manual.

The Fit, as its name implies, is brilliantly designed for capacity, but doesn't appear well suited for driving on interstate highways. Too bad so many of the little wagons are gone. The Civic wagon was superb.

If I were the Rams defense, I would disown the offense. They held the Pats to basically a shutout, and their brilliant offense minded coach threw generic gravy at them.

I have to totally disagree, especially if the car is running just fine. A water pump is a part of routine maintenance, they are going to go sooner or later on any car that has high miles on it. So you replace it and it's good for another xxx miles. It's routine, like a battery or alternator or brakes or tires, things that wear with time and miles.

I used to do 40K driving miles a year, putting 200K+ miles on a car, and the only time I'd think of junking the car was a) if the engine died, or b) if the tranny died. Almost everything else is fixable and cheaper than getting another car. But I suspect I'm preaching to the choir.

The issue is we are looking to downsize in a few years and likely move into a town or city where we can be a one-car family (I would walk or ride to work). There is no way mrs datlas will drive a stick, so the next new car will be one for both of us to share eventually. Thus, (with apologies to R.E.M), automatic for the people.

You are, indeed. This repair is going to be done but the next medium or high-ticket repair (even if routine maintenance) is likely the beginning of the end.

Another reason why I'm still pissed about the Saints game. Say what you will about Sean Payton, he certainly wouldn't have called a conservative game if they'd gone to the SB.

Yeah, I think the rational case for car replacement mostly boils down to convenience/reliability/other, not dollars and cents.

On Shimano SPD SL pedals, does turning the adjustment to (-) make it easier to clip out of?

I think my greatest regret is not hanging on to my 1977 VW van. If only I'd have known its value would've gone up to approx 20x what I paid for it 20 years ago...

Sad.
