if it is required you better get interested. The best way is to do a little bit at a time. Like eating an elephant - one bite at a time.

Paper log books are fine, but the times are moving to electronic. I’ll wait til my daughter can type and then have her input the info. Heard it builds lots of character, kind of like a mechanical watch.

Elgins from when Elgin was still a company, not just a collection of trademarks (1867-1964), and still making them in America. My favorites tend to be the smaller, rectangular models from the 1940s and 1950s. But I have small collections of both the large keywound models from the first 10 years, and the later 'railroad' pocket watches from the 40s and 50s.
The great thing is they're so inexpensive on Ebay that I have no qualms about applying my meager mechanical skills to servicing them, which is good since a professional service starts north of $150.

For example, here's the watch I wore on Christmas. Elgin 19 "Crusader" from about 1953.
That's a faceted crystal, which can make reading the time a little funny - at Noon and 6 the hour hand doubles from certain angles.

OK, but go easy on her. Be especially careful when you teach her how to use a can opener on a can of beans.

With analog, you answer "What time is it?" with replies like "Quarter after 5" or "10 of 6" or such. Digital, you answer to the minute, even if it's not right.

And if you spring for a new crystal at the same time, you'll be AMAZED how just those two things will make the watch look new,

First undisputed winter ride in ages today. I'm not even sure I wore my snowsuit last winter, but I did today. It blows, but I HTFU.
I think there's a developing issue with the drive train. The chain isn't sagging, but it's periodically making unusual noises. For example, sometimes if I coast a bit and then suddenly start pedaling with moderate force it makes a "clack" noise like something is loose.
I saw several nearby people still have Christmas lights displaying in their yards, unlike the scrooges here.

I vaguely remember having a freehub issue maybe eight years ago and this might be similar. Doesn't above require you to take things apart, though?

Yes, similar to Trsnrtr I started with a journal, then a spreadsheet then let the Garmin do the heavy lifting. Every ride since 1989.
(Now, I download it from Garmin connect as needed.)
