Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oh, and for those keeping score: today, Saturday, is one of my usual ride days... and it's raining. Again.

We are having a Passover Seder on Zoom this weekend. For those who don't know, it's a ceremony that is done at HOME (not temple/synagogue) with a mixture of prayers, symbolic foods, retelling the history of the Exodus, and songs/celebration. It can be quite a serious thing but in my family we skip some of the boring stuff and focus on the important stories and songs, a serious seder can take a couple hours but ours is only about 40 minutes. The seder stories/prayers/songs are in a book called a Haggadah.

That's the backstory.

I mentioned to my dad last week that it would be helpful if he could scan and email the relevant pages from the Haggadah to everyone on the Zoom meeting.

His response: I did that last year. Don't you still have it?? He was serious. He was shocked to hear that we would not have saved the printout and/or email files from 1 year ago.

#HappyPassover
I would have saved it. Mb's are free. The point goes to Dad.

I only have a cadence sensor on the Allez. I mainly use it to make sure I'm not mashing too much on the hills.

Cadence is what it is on the single speed. And I don't care about cadence so much off road.

It's a feet-up sort of weekend now. Doctor's orders.

A downside is that I'm in charge of meal prep. Fortunately, our local baker makes really good meat pies and there is plenty of wine.

Thanks! It was so much fun doing it! Gave me confidence, too. I was fiddling with the Battaglin, trying to get it ready for riding (I decided not to ride it outside between November and April, so I wouldn't risk getting mud on the white bar tape), and I noticed the shifting at the back was really dodgy. It kept wanting to drop more than one cog each time I tried to shift to a smaller one. I finally LOOKED at the alignment, and the hanger's bent. I think it got that way in the trainer, maybe I tightened the clamp too much? Anyway, I thought about tossing it in the car to take to the LBS, but that's TWO trips plus paying for it. So I bought a Park hanger alignment tool, which, with 6 bikes is probably a good investment!

Breathing was a little tougher than normal, but I kept my numbers up with a lower cadence, because the strength work was helping with that. Rest week hit, and I was waking up at night more and more with a cough. I set an appointment a couple weeks ago for yesterday, and wasn't sure I was going to make it. Once the rest week was over, I tried some scheduled 2 minute 125% intervals, and could only make it a minute before giving up.. It continued to get worse, and sleeping was something I was beginning to dread, because every 1.5-2 hours, I was awake with a non productive coughing fit. Then, breathing became tougher.

Yesterday, Lotus had an appointment at the ophthalmologist to see if/when she needed entropion surgery, and I had to carry her up a flight of stairs. She's never seen a full flight of stairs, so she put the brakes on. At least she figured it out and was able to walk down them! At the top, I thought I was going to pass out. Breathing with a mask on became almost impossible, but I was able to catch my breath and continue on with the appt. Sucked! Either way, x-rays, ekg, all shows OK and no Covid, so I get some high zoop Wixela powdered inhaler, and some Prednisone. Getting old sucks.

Last night was the first time I got a good nights sleep in over two weeks.

Man, that sucks. Glad to hear the dog drugs are helping.

Average cadence for today’s 40 miler was 91. That’s in the ball park for an everyday ride.

When I ride with data, I'll often find myself thinking, "Isn't it time to go to a smaller gear?" and I'll look down and my cadence is close to 90. If I think "Time for a bigger gear", it's usually over 102. So I tend to just stay in the 94-100 range. Unless I'm climbing, of course. Then all bets are off. That's what used to bug me about the SRAM 12-28 cassette I had on the Ritchey - it had a gap where I was either spinning under 90 or over 105. Too slow, or too fast. I'd keep upshifting and downshifting trying to find the right gear and failing.

My natural cadence is somewhere between 70 and 80 rpm. I've trained myself to stay in the 85 to 90 rpm range for JRA. Downhill, I usually don't spin passed 110. After that, often before that, I'm better off just getting aero (LOL) and enjoying the ride.

First real group ride of the season today. A winter of intervals, fake group rides and TTs on Zwift, and leg weights, has payed off nicely.

Thanks guys.

Pulse Ox last night walking the halls of the clinic with the P/A, went from 91 to 88, and I was breathing hard. So weird how quick it hit. Course, 91 and 88 sucks farts, but it is what it is.

Today, I did A/R on the TT bike for an hour. Upside, I did 60' AR, downside, HR at 136, which matched watts. Normally I'm at 110 or so on the heart.
