Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No rain, but plenty of puddles and water streaming across roads everywhere. The biggest issue I had was wind. It wasn't quite, but felt like, The Omnidirectional Headwind. And enough gusty crosswind in unpredicted places to make me more cautious with my speed than usual. Still, WAY better than wet!!

In other news I picked up some scorpion pepper sauce today. It’s amazing. I’m putting it on everything.

Well I am a dumb ass, LR44 will work as well, and my local hardware store has those. Will have to pick those up tomorrow. Wanted to ride the el diablo tomorrow. It’s so smooth and quiet, but whyfi created a data junky, and just doesn’t feel right purposely riding without data.

So magic man it is.

A squall blew through just a minute or two after The Older Boy and I had agreed he could walk to work (it's about 2 miles). So I ended up taking him, but as it turned out he could have walked anyway. On my ride, I felt a grand total of 3 raindrops. A whole lot more water splashed up on me than fell down on me.

i have a serious issue with heat and humidity - although i can enjoy it while in a nonfunctional state (lying down drinking a cocktail / reading / napping / floating) it’s a no-go for actually doing anything above about 85 for me. so the 50-80 range we get here pretty much year round works for me. especially until this year, when rain only happened at night and a few times a year in the winter.

interestingly, my two kids have inherited this as well. they wilt almost instantaneously in heat/humidity, but argue endlessly about not needing a jacket here. or, maybe that’s because they never stop bouncing around.

Ok so the Quarqs we have (had) take CR2032s. The kind you can pick up at the grocery store and keep a six-pack of. If they've switched to charging I'm with you.

Holy Cow! I found a place with calves' brains on the menu. It's been a while since I've seen it, I remember when my favorite place in Vancouver scratched it off their menu during the Mad Cow scare, must've been 2004 or so?

I'm not brave enough to try 'em so I had a nice consomé with garbanzos, arroz, y res. The place was absolute anarchy right after mass on a Sunday but they had so many on staff, service was super quick.

Two lovely ladies out front running the tortilla line:

you were probably at fort baker. amazing riding just up the hills from there. i think the presidio (other side of the bridge) was transferred from the army in ‘94.

and the city hasn’t changed as much as people like to rage about. we’ve been here since ‘96, bay area my whole life. a little more expensive, some new buildings and a few new trains and a lot of new bike lanes, but really the only major major change has been covid, and post covid “work” from home…
