Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tough to say. Our 2007 Honda Odyssey cost almost nothing to maintain until 3 years ago when Heidi hit a log and bent the whole front end. It had 160k miles and was not worth fixing. I ride by the log on almost every ride I do (it’s just off the road) and refer to it as Heidi’s log.

On the way home from KCB I sometimes stop at the Walmart gas station. It's about 20 cents/gallon cheaper than the ones near home.

Walmart keeps emailing me these customer surveys. It's a gas station. I run the pump and put gas in the car. How much feedback do you need?

I've owned 11 Hondas/Acuras since 1992. 5 of which are Odysseys. Never had a problem with any of them beyond normal maintenance.

My 2019 Odyssey with 70,000 miles started making a scraping noise last Spring when backing up and now it's progressed to making the same noise going forward. After a couple visits to the Mother Ship, it's been decided that it needs a new transmission.

We're currently pleading mercy with Honda.

Just say "Well, it's no Buc'ees". Or however you spell it.

Walmart gas buying might get taken up to the next level.

Had 2 Chevys since 1996. Total price of both cars was $5600. Normal maintenance plus a transmission on the older one. 320,000 miles between them. Current one might need a trans soon.

I used to swear by King Cage SS bottle cages but in the past year I have had TWO break on me. See below. I sent them an email but have low expectations as they don’t technically have a warranty.

Note I did bend them at site of failure to demonstrate break.

Any suggestions on what to get for replacements?

Judging from the flatspots worn into the wire I'm gonna say you probably got pretty good mileage out of those. Maybe close to a 2019 Honda Odyssey transmission's worth of miles?

Maybe, but I am looking for the Saturn of bottle cages.

Speaking of mileage, I should hit 7500 miles for the year on tomorrow’s ride, if the weather allows.

My current odyssey is a lemon. Honda had to rebuild the engine under recall as it was burning oil due to design defect (ECO mode shuts down cyls and the piston rings align somehow from that, causing oil to go past at a prolific rate). This ruined the cat, which wasn't covered under the recall. And now there's a vacuum leak. And the AC leaks. And on and on. I've never owned a honda that hasn't been trouble. In fact I was meaning to make an appt today to get some of that fixed so it can pass inspection again.

First ride with the zwift hub is in the books. It was literally the worst one to attempt first... a bunch of 10s strength intervals. Erg on, erg off, shift here, shift there... it was like doing the hokey pokey.

The cadence data it spits out seems kinda trash, though. Maybe I'm losing ant+ connectivity? It's kind of all over the place, yet my head unit is solid as a rock using the quarq.

I tried to use cadence from quarq, and everything else from the hub, but I think that disables Erg mode and it switched back automatically.

I think Erg will be fine for normal workouts, though.

I do need to fiddle with the cassette some, I think.

I hate erg mode. When I do intervals inside in the garage in Zwift - I do it in free-ride/sim mode and warm up by riding towards segments that roughly match my intended duration. Kinda like one would riding in the real world.

I've been on a Saris H3 since early in the pandemic and I love it. I gets somewhere between 1/3 - 1/2 of my total saddle time throughout the year. It's been issue free so far.

Erg mode should be banned as torture by the Geneva Convention.

I've only had one headache with 11 vehicles. That was a new 1998 Accord that kept giving an error saying the gas cap wasn't sealing. The dealer gave up after several tries and had to consult Honda's engineers which finally decided there was a pinhole in some gas tank bladder. Don't quote me because I really don't remember very well but they finally fixed it after several weeks.

Update on my transmission. Honda has decided after my dealer provided proof that the underside of the van was pristine and that the tranny hadn't been scraped or smacked and that all service had been performed that they would warranty the transmission. Replacement transmission is on the way. Just waiting on a service window to do the work.
