Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do appreciate high performance machines in principle, in appropriate contexts

There's no scoring. You can watch for an hour and not see one goal. If a team gets ahead 2-0, the game is over.

They need to change the offsides rule, or something, to open it up. If game scores were in the neighbourhood of 5-4, I might be able to tolerate it.

yea, you lost me at vintage steel.
The other thing is, a lot of C&V bike collectors are Boomers and Gen-Xers who can finally afford the bikes they lusted after as utes. When I was 18, it was 1975. The hot bikes then had 5 speed freewheels, lugged steel frames, crappy single pivot brakes, 36 spoke wheels, and friction shifting. When you were 18, it was already 2005, so the hot bikes of your youth had carbon fiber frames, 10 speed freehubs, dual pivot brakes, brifters, and a lot fewer spokes. It makes sense that you feel no special affinity for bikes from before you were born!

A guy in my high school class got an AMX when he got his license. One of the later ones, though, not the original AMX that looked like the concept car. Those were cool.

I'm the same age, but I have zero nostalgia for the bikes of my youth. The new bikes are so much better. Function before form.

Also for watches. Most collectors of vintage mechanical watches are at least as old as me. Even Gen-Xers basically grew up with cheap quartz watches.

Oh, for sure. Even among Boomers, collectors are relatively rare. It's just that they're rarer among younger generations. Or perhaps, younger generations collect things from THEIR youths, not from ours.

I think it would be cool to have a classic lugged steel bike. As far as groupset goes, campy 9 speed or indexed DT shifters. Wouldn't want to go all the way back to friction shifters. I think that indexed DT shifters are brilliant, they work so well and they are so simple. I had a steel bike with a dura ace 7800 drivetrain and indexed DT shifters at some point. That was rad.

My view is that if a bike was A Good Bike when it was first built, and it works as well as it did when new, it's still A Good Bike. The fact that there are Better Bikes doesn't make it A Bad Bike. And for me, there's something about riding an old bike that speaks to me. I like taking a bike older than Bam out, and riding the hell out of it - stomping the hills, screaming down the descents, pushing hard along the flats. Basically all the stuff that's fun on ANY Good Bike.

But I have no illusions that any of my old bikes does ANYTHING better than, say, my Canyon. It's faster up the hills, down the hills, on the flats, around corners, etc. It simply does EVERYTHING better.

Custom built circa 1983 by a dear friend. It weighs a ton, has an obsolete fit (note the inverted stem, and sits on the trainer these days.

Two observations about friction shifting - First, when I was young, I HATED downtube friction shifters. I hated taking a hand off the bars to shift, I hated how fiddly it was. But after tens of thousands of miles riding bikes with brifters, I'm comfortable enough on the bike that taking a hand away for a second is no big deal, and with practice you just automatically move the lever enough to get into the right gear.

The second observation is that, IMO, friction shifting works better with fewer gears. My friction shifting bikes are all 6-speed. It's rare that I'll overshift, because the spaces between gears are so big. But 10 or 12 speeds? That's too many for friction.

My motorcycle friend/landlord had an AMX that he brought with him from Halifax. So it had a little rust but not too bad. It was a 1969 and looked like the picture but it was black. I don't know what he did with it, haven't seen him in years, but I'm sure it's worth a few bucks.
