Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was told to make it two days notice and fly on a #Capitalist airline with real planes where events like a panel blowing out were rare occurrences.
Only the Yugo is much worse than those.

And I've heard stories of people seeing Aeroflot crews drinking in the airport before their flight.

But still better than the Trabant, which was made out of glorified fiberboard.

I can't believe after all these years you don't get this thread yet. It's never about just one central topic. As someone recently said, it's often about 5 conversations all at the same time, and the topics vary all over the place. But, yes, one recent conversation touched on the fact that old steel bikes are not considered up to today's performance standards, but so what, many don't GAF about performance standards, different strokes for different folks. We moved on from that with no blood shed. On the other hand, you've been known to house several admirable old steel bikes.

The Loki episode "1893" has what I expect is a whoopsie, using the Russian Federation flag in that year instead of the Russian Empire.

Now I'm confused. It looked like you didn't know what the Yugo car was, then like you didn't know what Yugoslavia was. Elsewise, what was your "Yugo?" comment about?

What does yugo have to do with an Alaskan Airline 737 blowing out a plug?

On the C&V forum, there's a guy who lucked into a really nice bike, same era as my Ironman. Back when Nashbar was big, and selling good bikes under their own brand. Full 6208-series 600 groupset, Tange Champion 2 tubing, sew-up rims, Cinelli bar and stem. He wants to make a moustache-bar bike out of it. I find myself offended by the idea, but that's really just ridiculous on my part. It's a 38 year old bike that was being given away, because there are tons of old bikes out there in garages and such. The last thing that should bother me is somebody using it to make a bike they'll ride, instead of YET ANOTHER old bike sitting in a garage gathering dust. That way madness lies!

So, more power to him. I hope he builds it into a bike he'll go out and ride the hell out of.

LoP ride apparel report. After 30 mins, overheated on every climb, froze on every descent as per usual

Started out with only my eyes showing, wound up 86ing the gloves and tying my flannel round my neck like a preppy sweater.

...nothing surprising. I don't get most stuff. When I ride those, it feels to me like I'm riding road. It could be just my imagination, but like I said, I don't get most stuff. Here is a bike that, if it went any faster for me, I would be a danger to myself and others. Not that I am not a danger to myself and others in other ways, but just not so much from cycling. Apologies for more cycling content. I will try to stick to literary references and lurking occasionally in the future.
