I think I need both '1' and '4' more than the others but I doubt '4' is possible without '1'.

Jock, what was your process for eliminating back pain? I recently have been experiencing a return of debilitating lower pain I had previously overcome and can't seem to put a handle on cause. Heeeelp!!! (please)

You've been doing OK haven't you? As for recently obtaining lower back pain it could be anything, and could have been building up over a long period of time and is commonly caused by lack of core abdominal strength rather than any problem with the back muscles. Get a quack/physio to set it on the straight and narrow first.

I don't know enough to help with managing anyone's back pain but my own. My back pain is different to you everyday garden variety lower back pain, but the management plan is probably the same. Here's how I have handled it over a 24 month period.
1. Spin hands on hoods. Is it comfy? No? Adjust position according to what body sez is right
2. Climb hands on hoods. Is it comfy? No? Adjust position according to what body sez is right
3. Spin hands on hoods. Body say to adjust anything? Trim position, go back to step one. Repeat.
4. Ride lotsa miles with no back pain. When strong enough change handlebar height by changing stem angle and resetting seat position to suit. Oh yeah, you're back at step one. Repeat until stem angle at zero.
5. If you aren't already on the drops, start getting down more freq until comfy. If drops riding causes backpain then raise stem angle until comfy and then progress down.
6. Don't slouch when drinking. Especially important when you reach your umpteenth beer. Stand with one hand behind back to encourage best posture

On your freebie thingie, the obvious one to go for is the bike fit. Personally I don't trust anyone except myself to do that, and I get the feeling you're the same. To go for number 4 you would need to have at least some idea of your training zones, which implies that you need number 1. Do you trust these guys enough to do the testing properly and provide appropriate training zones? If so, do that. Any decent coach should eb able to build a program based on the results.

PS. I know nothing.

fellas, today at the start of bay crits, conspiracy theory, Hilton Clark SENIOR was doing a lap of the circuit with Robbie Mac. They were talking and I think they were talking tactics. Mcewen was 6 points behind which is a few too many.

As it was, it was redundant, Hilton junior had Cookie and Matt Wilson marshalling the front of the bunch and preventing Henderson being a threat. Another conspiracy, I think there was a peloton whisper to keep the crit title off the country with the long white cloud.

on the radio this AM, motorbike rider killed at Ourimbah yesterday. Probably one of the hoons screaming up and down the firetrails around near the MTB XC course.

And Jaws is out there again, be careful in the water :)

But do they eat the bogans?

climbo 01-08-06 03:00 PM

speaking of Bay crits, who is eligible to ride the support race? Is it an U23 race?

One of our club riders got top 10's and was 9th overall after stage 4 and got 4th in the last stage so probably moved up in the overall to a good spot.

Bogan-eating sharks, Australia's answer.

jock 01-08-06 03:19 PM

Sorry berny, I really shouldn't post when I'm over the limit. Geez I carry on with some crap.

I shoulda just sed "Gradually get your position down by changing the stem angle/height. You need to adjust your seat position slightly with each change in handlebar position because your pelvis gets rotated forward".

How about the little tacker that died from a stinger. Pain must've been unbelievable to put her into cardiac arrest. Terrible way to go.

By my rough calcs Dale finished in equal 6th on 18 points. His Madison partner Angus Morton ended up 4th after finishing out of the points yesterday.

Accusations of cheating in yesterday's race  http://www.jaycobayclassic.com.au/2006/?id=results5

I've been to the quack, they just tell me I'm old! :(
I've basically done all of the above following my intuition/logic and I've been able to manage in it the past so I guess I can do it again, it just takes time.

Yep, you're right about the bike fit thang and I think I'll do No. 1 but I'll need to buy a HR monitor.

::thinks:: (do I really want it to get this involved???? mmmmmmmmm)

A quack told me that once too. I was 26 at the time. Technically he was correct, but just blaming the aging process did not provide a solution to my problem. If a quack tells you your old, remind them that you don't pay them good money for bad comedy. Insist on a solution to the problem.. or your money back!

Yeah, it does take time. How much will depend on how your body adapts.

BTW. You don't need a polar HRM. Any will do as long as it can accurately read your pulse, and the display is big enough for you to read while you are riding

Brian 01-08-06 03:54 PM

Where was berny when I was practically giving them away for $40?

Anyone can ride the support series. It's rough and tumble in there!! Big fields, tight courses.

Just wondering who Dale's competition was? Top 10, he's doing well.

Top 10 is excellent. It's basically an A-Grade crit with a big crowd....also, every 2nd bloke is amped up to the bejeezus coz of the atmosphere, or out to try and prove a point that he should've been selected for the main game. Equals fast racing.

Steve Rossendell could blow the doors off 1/2 the Pro/Elite field.

Brad Scarfe had a tough time of it after having his bike stolen after the first stage! Couldn't get comfy on a borrowed bike and never figured in the mix. Shame really, he's been looking solid and focused over the last 8 weeks.

pshaw 01-08-06 05:12 PM

Looks like i might be working for a company with a bike team?

"Computer making giant Hewlett-Packard and Blackstone Group, the private equity firm, are examining a possible purchase of Computer Sciences Corp., the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter."

Still, 2 years at Rabobank didnt yield m(any) cycling freebies
