I've got a flatlander's 23 and I'm starting to wilt already! Bloke here at work does plenty of rides down in the alpine regions and he sed "Compact" straight up. And he's a strong climber! You might be limited to max 26 anyway if you've got the short cage rear dereilleur. Hopefully Hitchy will make it sound like a walk in the park.

Radical course only about 40km of flat riding in it. All the rest is flat out down hill or spinning uphill. Maybe a three-speed dragster would be a better alternative :D

I'll be lost inside my Thylo jobbie by then if I make myself look like an anna just to give myself a chance to get up those hills. I do have a 25 on the back of my thing and a cage shorter than a jockey's inseam. Can you put a ring smaller than a 39 on a standard crank? So you going to suck it up and have a crack with that 23? You should go down the hills alright. ;)

Nah, hopefully your workies just putting the wind up ya. But I'm not waiting for Hitchy to fill us with confidence. Are they true, the rumours he goes to drama school on the weekend?

BTW, it don't look that steep on that piccie you posted. :p

BTW, where that piccie come from?

jock 08-30-05 05:50 PM

Last day of winter lads.

Next week remind me not to do Dawn Patrol without having brekky first  I am so stuffed now I cant get to the kitchen to make brekky! I'll just sit here at my desk and wilt quietly.

Petacchi "I'm a little down on power". Yeah right. Rub it in why don't you Alex!

And Bradley McGee didn't put his signature at the sign-in, and while it's compulsory for every rider to do so, the leader was late but wasn't penalised by the race organisers. WTF?!? He's a lucky lad to get away with that so lightly. Musta been media commitments otherwise penalty for sure.

You can get a 27 on a short cage, but you may have to adjust the B stop thingy to stop the top roller hitting the big cog.

I train on a 25 and have a 27 on my race wheel with a short cage 105 derailleur.

Dunno. Ask your LBS. They'd love to say "no, but we can sell you a compact cranks solution for $XXX"
[EDIT] See 62Vette's post above.

I don't believe I will :) Looking at 25's so I've got something that resembles a granny gear.

The piccie is from google earth. None of our lame excuses for 'mountains' look steep, although I'm rather fond of the Gibraltar Ranges crossing which is very similar in distance and steepness to the 2004 ITT on Le Alp d'Huez. Must do the Grafton -Inverell one day to get the true feel of that one!

The purple line only roughly follows the path. You need you use the contour map and/or course profile on the Audax site to get the true picture of pain.

summer has hit already, 25 today :)

climbo 08-30-05 08:34 PM

38 is about all that will fit, the crank arms will limit the ring size you can get on. Not really worth doing, it only saves you about 1 gear inch. The 25 vs. the 23 gets you about 3.5 lower.

"Germany's world track cycling sprint champion Rene Wolff has accepted Aussie Ryan Bayley's challenge to a match race at the Avanti Sydney Thousand carnival at the Dunc Gray Olympic Velodrome, Bass Hill, on Sunday afternoon, 27 November."

Bring on the trash-talk! :D
