nasty!

jock 08-31-05 09:22 PM

Yeah, thanks for that. I just finished lunch. I see wire and titanium plates in that poor guy's future.

Wasn't there a similar incident in another recent tour?

Not good. Very rare for someone to land directly on their face.

Hope he gets well soon.

Sounds like he's had a stroke while racing. Very unlucky.

HDTVKSS 08-31-05 10:38 PM

i know its probably not the greatest observation, but hes lucky he had a helmet on ( obviously he would racing) jaw damage etc is bad but repairable, brain damage isnt.

feel bad for the guy and i hope he recovers.

Man good glasses & helmet..... not a scratch.

Worth every penny, wonder what he would have looked like without those?

climbo 08-31-05 11:42 PM

From the Hobart Wheelers forum at http://www.hobartwheelers.com

Guys,

This is not very pleasant news . . .

Simon has been involved in a serious accident whilst racing

yesterday. An attached likn shows some of his injuries . . . PLEASE

BE AWARE IT'S NOT AT ALL PLEASANT . . . so don't view if you don't

need to.

http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.ph...nsroadvanderaa

Anyway, he's said to have had a stroke during the race and crashed

heavily on his face and shoulders. the kid's in a bad way BUT

STABLE. He's been transferred to St Vincents in Melbourne. His

parents and Sam have made their way their first thing this morning.

I'm sure all our best wishes are with Sime & co for a speedy

recovery. Positives are that medical staff don't believe the stroke

has caused any permanent damage, however, the next 24-48hrs will

reveal more.

Ben and Therese will be with him most/all of the day, however their

mobile numbers are *** and *** and would happily accept

messages/best wishes.

Sorry to be the bearer of such ****ty news.

Dom

I crashed on my head when I was 19 and looked worse. Wasn't a stroke though. I was just an idiot :D

Poor bloke though. Fark.

A 2004 Trek 5200 OCLV team bike with Bontrager Aero wheels for races and tours and a 2005 Trek 5000 OCLV for training. Same size same layout, the 5200 is just lighter by 1 lb. :-) Love riding them both!

cycle17 09-01-05 10:25 AM

oops sorry posted on the wrong thread!

Samtron I have the 2004 Mach 1800 and Mach 2200. They are both pretty porky at 9.8 and 9.3kg naked respectively. Add on two full bidons, tools, a halogen lightset, pump, etc and your looking at nearly 12kg! I don't mind the extra weight because I'm only racing club level. Makes climbing 'interesting' :)

The thing is they were super-cheap, sturdy, and very reliable. If I throw them down the road and trash them I won't be shedding any tears.

Specs (except weight, doh!) at http://www.gitane.com.au/2004mach2200.html and http://www.gitane.com.au/2004mach1800.html.

badsac 09-01-05 05:01 PM

Did you keep the R540's on your 2200 jock?

jock 09-01-05 05:04 PM

Yes. For better or worse. But they only see super smooth hotmix, so they aren't truly tested :D

How's your set going? Broken a spoke yet?

badsac 09-01-05 05:18 PM

Nup. Mine are straight as the day I got the bike. Kind of wish they'd throw spokes everywhere so I'd have an excuse to jump on the "R540's are sh1t" bandwagon and get another set of wheels. No that I have much experience with other wheels, but I get the feeling that these ones ride fairly harshly. But really I can't complain at all. They've been very good to me so far.

jock 09-01-05 05:41 PM

Seems to be a distinct split on the 540s between the "they're ****e" group and the "seem ok to me [shrug]" group.
