jock 09-18-05 08:21 PM

:roflmao: Thanks for the excellent advice vette & climbo!!! :D

I'm looking at a pretty pic of a Specialized Roubaix and guess what's on it? Yup, big black stoopid spoke guard. Looks so wrong.

climbo 09-18-05 09:20 PM

anyone know local stockist of BBB sunglasses on the coast?

Brian 09-18-05 09:35 PM

I know Hadley's carries BBB, but I don't recall seeing their sunnies.

I just stumbled across some Yank's impression of The Hell Ride:

"Flat-out hammerfest on flat terrain for about 50 miles with 250 -> 300 elite riders. Avg speed 30+ mph."

"It was a real rush. At home (Maui), there are only about a dozen or so elite riders; so blasting down a 4-lane at Mach 2, elbow to elbow with several hundred racers, is a rare treat. Pace is very fast and the skill level of the riders is high.
If you're planning a trip to Melbourne, bring your bike."

:) I am now the proud owner of a 52cm Felt TK2 track bike (first ever)... or at least I will be proud until friday night when you guys tell me its too small and I slip down the DG banking

Anyway, all i need to do now is get some pedals, thought I would stick with looks and move the current pedals over and upgrade.... :( Keos llok good but the cleat is incompatible, next pair from my current 5.1s is CX6 at $350

Not even ebay can help me!

Think i might go for a quick half hour now!

jock 09-18-05 11:28 PM

Have fun :D

and if you're going to the track watch out for the group of magpies in the north-east corner. Good for practicing your jumps and sprinting technique :)

climbo 09-18-05 11:45 PM

we got smashed at Empire Bay by a brutal maggie on Sat morn, going up a hill too so we were a good target for several hits each. :(

jock 09-18-05 11:48 PM

:roflmao: The Daleys Point Bomber is back for another season of fun!!!! He's got a taste for blood that one.

Others to watch out for are

- Manns Rd West Gosford near the speed camera: he will even attack you under cover of darkness!
- The Entrance Rd Bateau Bay, just as you reach the shopping centre heading towards The Entrance.

I think they've moved or destroyed the one that used to perch on the foreshore at Gosford where they held the Bike Week Bash.

climbo 09-18-05 11:51 PM

so you know him well it seems....

pshaw 09-19-05 12:41 AM

Great fun! I need bigger legs!

Yep, that magpie, I got whacked a few times before jumping and looked back to see it hammerin Climbo... very funny when it's not you.

Talking of funny, some guy getting motorpaced at the track, nice and friendly makes sure im cool circling round the top... which I am as its all new...

Anyway, after a few spins I though I'd try and keep pace with him on the straight by jumping out of the bank on the bend... needless to say he blew past like I was going backwards..

So they finish and the guy on the bike offers me a few laps which I politley decline... new bike and all...

Turns out to be Michael Frost motorpacing Phil Thaux at 60Kph sustained for a lonnnnggg time....

Think I gave them a laugh trying to get on the back!!!

LOL

How was it then? Apart from being difficult to pedal. Does it fit OK?

pshaw 09-19-05 12:53 AM

My chain creaks ;)

It feels good, not as wierd as expected...without actually being in a race or knowing how far you ave to sprint, sustain efforts its hard to tell the gearing etc.

felt great though, the fit seems 100%

climbo 09-19-05 01:05 AM

cool, now you're ready to hit the REAL boards !!

Yeah, go ahead and rub it in real hard :p

You can have practice a ride on the Dunc with a trainer on hand during the day Mon-Thu for ~$10. Worth it if you've never been on banking or boards before. See the CNSW website at http://www.nsw.cycling.org.au/files/..._Try_Track.htm

Man I'm there! One day this week for sure.

So how many races are there and what do they consist of?

pshaw 09-19-05 04:57 AM

With your gearing (48x15) 60kph would require your pins to be idling at a lazy 145rpm! You'll prolly be doing that in the sprints on Friday.

Phil would probably have been pushing somwhere around 53 x 14 for a more sedate rpm of around 120.

Div 5 is where noobs start, and they usually only do basic racing for safety reasons. We had 4 races last week: 2x12 lap scratch, 1x8 lap handicap, and 1x12 lap combined Div5 & 4 scratch. Excellent fun.

Sounds great, are you still on 48x15? so how did you go last week?

I raced on a light 48 x 16 for snappier acceleration. Div five speeds are not very high and the races are short so there was no need to go for a taller gear.

So if you can spin smoothly at 140-150 rpm without bouncing then your 48 x 15 will easily get you across the line at the head of the pack.
