Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'll be doing the full ATB. Melbourne to Sorrento first. Definately want the good weather.

I have a massive issue paying to ride on public roads if it's not a race.

for those of you that compete in crits, road races etc, at what level is their prize money? ( if any??) just curious. in MTB there seems to be cash at the elite state/national level, was wondering if the same was extended across road racing?

Oh no, not at all. I haven't finished 'wrecking' Bikeforums yet. Once I have though, oh yeah, I'll have to concentrate solely on the Serotta forum so I can 'wreck' that, too.

yeah it's cash at that level, here's the prize list for the Melb-Warn.

https://www.caribou.net.au/pdf/melbwa...money_2005.pdf

It's cash at our local races also, the more people that race, the more gets allocated to prize money.

not a lot at local races though, a win might get you $10 to $100 depending on division and size of race. My CD race win in Div C1 got me $45 on Sunday.

What do you get for a MTB race?

club level, even to A grade seems to win you a nice purty ribbon. given that at western syd 100+ ppl normally turn up at $15 a pop, you think they could at least throw some money down.... Im not sure on nat/state i think it depends on the club running it.

Theres an event known as the Epic running up in QLD shortly, and i think there are a few $400 prizes on offer for winning or leading at certain points. its also the richest MTB race in aus....

I read somewhere that lot of european ('club' level) races no longer offer cash prizes. They used to be rich events but now they often just offer local produce like a giant ham or cheese or whatever. Their reasoning is that guys were juicing up to take out the prizemoney and the quality of racing wasn't good because of the constant blocking.

i guess that the reasoning behind the giant ham or cheese is to offset any benefit of juice?

Ah, bugger.

Well, next time yell out 'Wazzzzzaaaaaaa'?

That musta been Friday when I was out taking photos of all the cool graffiti and stencil art down Hosier Lane, amongst other things.

Half an hour later I nearly got squished by Johnny Ho and his rabbit-in-the-headlights family as he decided he could scoot past me in his 4wd then turn in front of me.

Lama, don't think that I'm just picking on you, but I'm really anxious to see if such a store actually exists. I'd be surprised here with any two of those at one store.
