Why does Trek get bashed so much?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So now you're mad at Trek for being popular and trying to make money, people who associate Lance's wins with the bike he rode, AND people that buy expensive bikes and don't live up to your expectation of what a cyclist is.

Do you see a therapist?

You're either a pacifist or a vegan. I'm willing to bet you hate George Bush too.

Keep going. You're doing good!

Neither. I love a good ribeye and I really wanted our military to kick some Iraqi ass.

Nope. I actually voted for him. I think he's screwed up a few times, though, and I don't agree with some of his decisions any longer, especially about illegal immigration.

But I'm not the one with all the anger and upset over what other people are doing, or how they make their money, or how they spend it.

Nothing wrong with that! ....but I'll chime in with regards to trek. I think they make some great stuff. The only thing I don't like is that I think their value/$ is less than some other companies that make just as good a product but sell for less. I think, like Nike, they are able to get away with that. JMO

Do you? I don't know, I'm not qualified to make that recommendation. That's why I asked if you were seeing a therapist.

Even if I was seeing a professional (not), do you really think I'd tell some fool on the internet?

Please.

I just can't focus on anything but that power unibrow in Cypress's avatar. That thing commands respect.

Is that the soundboard man for System of A Down??

Brian, aren't you around 40? Please refrain from using your street parlance, the kids who I deal with at work say "my bad' all day long.
Drives me nuts.

Well, if you did tell some fool on the internet, that's your right. It's also your right to see a professional.

...

Just like it's Trek's right to manufacturer a $10k bike, and anyone's right to buy it.

Now please understand I'm not begruding you your right to disagree with the decision to sell and/or buy a $10k Trek. Nor am I begrudging you your right to openly state that you don't like Trek. I just don't understand the anger and disgust you seem to harbor over the deal.

Think about it. Trek became very popular long before Lance came along. I grew up in Wisconsin when Trek became popular in the 80's. There is a simple reason Trek became very popular. The name.

That's it. The name. TREK is a very simple catchy name that is easy for people to recognize and jive with. Just like Schwinn (before they self-destructed). Throw in some good marketing, and you have a winner. The name says it all for the average person who wants a good qaulity product that they know has built a good reputation over the last decade.

The average Joe doesn't want some off-brand bike that noone can recognize. But if they had a shiny new TREK, they all say, "Hey cool, a TREK. Nice Bike." Because everyone recognizes it. Simple.

You have a good point. When I first got into cycling and wanted to look up road bikes, the first brand to come to mind was TREK. I had no idea what Lance was riding, nor did I care. It was just: say what's that one bike called..oh yeah TREK. Not exactly why I ride a Trek now though.

Good point. A lady that works for me came into my office today (out of the blue) and said she had been on line looking at Trek Bikes. She was going to start riding and wanted a new bike. I ask her if she had considered any other brand and she quickly let me know that she wanted the best and besides that she really didn't know any other brands.
Your right. It really is simple. Good name and good marketing of that name with a pretty good reputation amongst the majority.

Bikes: 1 trek, serotta, rih, de Reus, Pogliaghi and finally a Zieleman! and got a DeRosa

and here I was all ready to lock this quagmire of a flamefest when
Patriot had to go and bring it back on topic. . .

btw I think on page 2 or 3 I mentioned the story of the name, Afrikaans and all,
and "trek" it's catchy!

It's not just name recognition though, it is a combo of factors. Everyone knows Ford and Chevy and yet they lose billions.

I think in Trek's case it is style, price, percieved performance, and other intangibles like the sponsorship of Lance.
