I live in NJ and am looking at my license now. It is endorsed by the New Jersey MOTOR vehicle commision as an AUTO DRIVER license.

I agree that they should be able to ticket for speeding (albeit unusual and way to go), red light running (I do it too), etc, but points on my license and insurance increases don't make sense.

Cops have been known to take the wrong interpretation on laws or even make something up occasionally. If the cop thinks the wrong thing and acts on it, the court will correct it. I'm sure you've heard of "Innocent until proven guilty." That is the reason there are trials or court dates.

I got a warning for going through a red light. I stopped first. That probably saved me. I could tell it was going to be just a warning because the cop was realy pulling attitude and bellitlling me with the question answer business like he was talking to a ******. He got his attitude outporring done, felt better, and moved on because I sucked it up and took it. I nice cop who talks like he respects you is going to ticket your ass.

If you were trying to keep up with him, wasn't he speeding?!? I guess he's allowed to speed, like all the cops I see on the highway. And they wonder why people have so little respect for speed limits. I always thought we should be able to make a citizens stop on any police officer breaking the law, and give them a ticket. Who exactly do they work for anyway? (end rant!)

No, you aren't the only one. I especially liked the part about onlye endangering a pedestrian or squirrel. Sounds a lot like "only endangering a bicyclist or pedestrian" to me. Not only did the OP not get a ticket, he also wasn't detained, and without ID, having been subject to being ticketed by virtue of having exceeded the speed limit, he could have been detained until his identity could be proven.

I'm all about the whole "I got pulled over for speeding on my bike" stories, but to criticism, disrespect, and contempt for people that sign up to risk their lives to save others is disgusting.

Bikes moving at 41mph cannot turn or stop nearly as fast as a car. I hope the OP wasn't going down a residential street that fast. Kids can pop out of nowhere.

Don't get me wrong. I've been trying to get a speeding ticket on my bike for years but have never succeeded. However, it wouldn't occur to me to whine about getting pulled over for doing something I knew was illegal. If you don't like being pulled over by the cops, don't break the law.

Besides, 11mph over the limit is substantial. I'm always glad when the cops enforce the speed limits, and I see no reason to base enforcement on vehicle type.

You should have kept riding. High speed chase on a bike. Helicopters, news vans, awesome. In Cali if the officer caused you to crash, can we say lawsuit in your favor.

Ok . Rule #1 When stopped don't say "slow day today" ,"Don't you have anything better to do?" ,donut shop closed", "I pay your salary", lets not ever forget "Do you know who I am?" I'll say "I don't care" the boreish behavior will get a violation of the 'KLEENEX,BOUNTY,BRAWNEY, AND KOTEX ACT" of 2006 , Contempt of cop!!! Look if you guy and gals want to be a-hole's ok.But the old rule in law enforcement is a cop stops a guy for a rolling stop sign and the violator say's "well I slowed down" the cop takes his night stick out and starts beating him on the head and say's "do you want me to slow down or do you want me to stop?" Actually Belle Meade Blvd. is under the jurisdiction of the Belle Meade police department. They have actually pulled over plenty of cyclists. Oh yeah, they even gave Prince William a ticket for jaywalking when he was here last year.

so i tried and tried today to match my speed that I hit yesterday and the most i could do was 38 mph. Also, the speed limit was actually 35 not 30. I must have only hit that speed for ten seconds or so yesterday with the tailwind. So 41 in a 35 is not near as bad as 41 in a 30 as I had previously posted. That's funny tarmac...did they really give prince william a ticket? or was that sarcasm? Do you ride a tarmac? I don't see many of those out there often.

Supposedly the Prince William story is true. Since Belle Meade is one of the top ten richest zip codes in the country, royalty means nothing to them!

I do ride a Tarmac and I ride over in the park and out and back on the Blvd. as often as I can. I'm trying to make it to the Thursday night rides with Harpeth Bike Club this year, but work is going to make it tough sometimes.

i think i ran into that bike club tonight...i passed them as they were beginning and a guy flew off the front and blew buy me (i was doing 24mph at the time) and I never saw him again...a few minutes later their pace line caught up and I hung at the back around the loop out to west end and back to the park entrance. I'm not skilled yet at riding with a group so I stayed back just using them as a pace setter. I was looking at Tarmac's just recently but i decided to get my Pegoretti and I couldn't be happier...don't see too many of those out on the road

Hah! I know where that is. So you got pulled over for going 41? If the cop had waited more than 30 seconds he probably could have nabbed at least 5 cars going 50+. lol

it was right at dusk and there weren't too many cars out anymore (dinner time)....i was riding the loop out to west end when he stopped me...it sucked cause there was about 20 minutes of day light and i was rushing back to the car (i don't like riding at dusk it is too dangerous)

Come to think of it, when I was a teenager I once went 44mph in Percy Warner Park (down a massive hill of course). Good thing the cop didn't see that!

I see that you're from Manassas, Virginia. It might interest you to know that in this state, along with many others, it is not required to show ID when asked by law enforcement. If the officer were to have detained him for failure to show ID, he would have been in direct violation of the law. You are only required to carry a driver's license when you are driving a MOTOR vehicle.

It would have made for an even better story had he been detained - the wrongful detention lawsuit would have been a slam dunk. I'm sure, though, that the cop knew this, and that's why he was not detained.

To anyone who favors intentionally breaking the law, mouthing off to cops doing their job, and then trying to weasel out of the penalty -- it's dudes like you that bring harrassment on the rest of us and make the cops and the rest of public unsympathetic to cyclists.

If someone loses control of their car trying to avoid an accident and gets stuck in a ditch, I'll bet many of you would help push the car out. However, if it's some punk trying to scare you while you're riding, my guess is that you laugh and let him sit there. What goes around comes around.

you can laugh all you want...but the numbers of cyclist run over greatly increase at dusk and dawn. People in cars don't see as well and I don't have lights on the bike....

That's awesome! Everytime I'm going downhill and I see a speed limit sign, I do my best to break it. LOL

The cop was probably watching out for you and preventing an unforseen accident
