Knee Pain-I think I know the Answer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Knee Pain-I think I know the Answer

I am right leg dominant. I've noticed some slight soreness on the front of the knee just to the left of the midline. After today's hilly ride with my club, I noticed significant soreness in the area of the quadriceps tendon and patella while I was hanging out with the fellas. It went away pretty quickly, but I am thinking I may have to raise my saddle. My left knee is completely asymptomatic. I do feel somewhat "cramped" when I'm in the drops.

Same situation here... and spent yesterday looking at possible causes. One piece of advice I received was to be certain to stretch my butt and my IT band as well as quads very well every day before and after riding - apparently there is a common syndrome which causes similar pain and which results from over-tight IT band / glutes and which causes unusual patellar movement, which can irritate both the ligaments and the cartilage in the front of the knee.

Very true. I am familiar with Ilio-tibial Band syndrome and I think this is playing a role in my problem.

So raising your saddel is a possible solution to front knee pain? That's odd, becuase I actually lowered my seat to get rid of the pain.

Probably a host of other factors that come into play, but it had to be said nonetheless.

I hear one legged drills with the weak leg really helps.

stretch your hamstrings, no lie, it will take pressure off the front of your knee and alieviate the tendonitis symptoms, i have to do it more when it is cold.

Raising the saddle may help, but try this in small increments.
Pedals with more float may help.
Stretching will probably help.
Riding at a higher cadence and lower gear may help.
