Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bachelor Party Ride

I went on my last ride as a single man last night.

Too bad the wife to be won't let me bring the bike to Aruba with me, as she claims she doesn't want to share me with the mistress during the honeymoon.

Bikes: More than I need, really.

Does the word "harbinger" mean anything to you?

"Harbinger" is right.

The title to your freedom has just been transferred into her name, my man...

Congratulations!

If you think your life is going to change after you get married then just wait till you have a kid(s). I wa s able to do the things I enjoyed after I got married but once there is child in the picture that's when they wives change. I get home from work and hear "I hope you don't think you're going for a 2 hour ride this evening." all the time.

I have a wife, and a baby daughter. I tell my wife that my biking is about three things:

1) Transportation (I commute by bike)
2) Hobby

and the big one:

3) Fitness

Pull the "I want ot be around to see our grandchildren, and be healthy enough to enjoy it" card.

I regularly pad my commute home with an extra half hour of riding, and occasional weekend rides.

Now I'm not a competitive rider or anything, that would be a whole different ball of wax. But everyone needs hobbies.

I love countering this one with... "Here's the choice.... I get to take a 3 hour ride that costs me nothing but some Clif Bars, gels, and gatorade..... or I take up golf and I'm gone with the boys for 6+ hours for the round and shell out dough for greens fees and post-round drinks...."

I've gradually built up the acceptable level of riding time, and I didn't even get my road bike till after our first kid was born! With a second one due in about a month, I'm doing whatever I can to make the wife know that cycling keeps me sane and I think she understands that. She also knows that the baby better get here by its due date or earlier, or else I'm going to have to miss the Horribly Hilly Hundreds.... hmmm....

Yeah, you gotta nip that **** in the bud. Next thing you know, you'll be asking permission to watch TV.

If she starts to complain about "sharing" you with the bike, retort with "nobody's stopping you from getting a bike and riding with me". I've found that tends to shut them (non-riding people) up rather quickly.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hear it every time and she is reasonably understanding when she has been home all day watching my son. I usually pull the hobby/fitness card. She gets to go out for dinner or whatever with her friends almost every week and I stay home. We also ride as a family about once a week. It's just since I've taken up riding and fitness in general that I have to choose between that evening ride on the motorcycle and bike. Last year I chose the bike alot more and it helped me drop 50lbs.

Bike riding builds strong legs and good endurance. Both are important on a honeymoon.

So.......Does she want you to stay in good shape?

Deal....................................or No deal?

Well, the shorts are the only real tough part, but they have zippers on the side.

Take how much you ride now, and cut the riding in half, because that is all you will get to ride after marriage. Congrats!

Wow you guys have all married the wrong women. My wife has no problems with my riding, of course I don't abuse her with it either. I ride in the mornings before work when it will have the least impact on our family. I take the kids on weekends sometimes as well. She knows I'll be gone from around 7am to noon on Sat and Sun, and longer if I'm racing. She totally understands that this is my therapist couch and she's happy that at 44 I'm better shape than most guys my age.

Now I'm no Neanderthal either, I help with cooking, cleaning, laundry, and the kids. My wife works also so dumping all that on her wouldn't be fair.

Tell her that you need to bring your bike in order to help with the Natalie Holloway search efforts. She'll be sympathetic and won't mind you riding 95% of your honeymoon.

I know we're all having fun here with some good natured joshin', but seriously, this 'no bikes allowed on the honeymoon' thing, while seemingly innocuous, is deeply, deeply wrong because it sets a precedent. If the honeymoon is a 'special occassion' in which she can dictate how you spend 100% of your time, what's next?

If it were me, I'd take the bike on principal, even if you don't ride it at all.

Tell her this: "Fine, I won't bring the bike. As long as I can get the same amount of "riding time" in."
