NYC exercise SOS - Part 2
Ok, I got a lot of great info from people on places to ride in and around NYC. Now the problem
is that with all the people staying at my parents place in mahattan, I think my mom will cut
me out of the will if I bring my bike home, and I can't find anyone else who can store it for me that lives
anywhere nearby.
What should I do?? I'm in the midde of doing lots of volume and some LT work and climbing. I can't
imagine being off the bike for 2-3 weeks. Here are a couple of things I am considering. Do any of
you New Yorkers know if any of these will be feasable?
(1) Find some shop that might give me a deal on renting a decent racing bike a couple of times per week so I can just take it back to the store when I am done with it.
(2) Find a gym that has computrainers. (is there even such a thing??)
(3) Find a gym that has spin bikes that have a power meter in them - like what Saris has.
Help!!! I don't want to lose all the fitness I have worked so hard for especially since I will be racing next season. I am currently training 15-18 hours per week and I can't imagine my exercising going to zero.

Most gyms have exercise bikes with watt meters now. You can even crank it up to.... 400 watts!!

There are bike shops in the city that will rent you racing bikes, I believe it's like $50 a day.
Where do your parents live?
A local parking garage might "park" your bike for you for a couple of bucks. A superintendent of your parents or a local building might find a spot to put your bike for a couple of dollars. Put an ad on craig's list. I'd let you keep your bike at my house, but I'm in Long Island. Maybe someone will let you keep your bike at their place.

Some of the larger apartment buildings probably have storage areas for tenants. If not in your parent's building maybe one of the other buildings in the neighborhood? Then there's always balcomies/fire escapes.

First - ask your mom
Second - find out if there's a basement/bike room. A lot of buildings in the city do have them. If not ask the super if there's space in the basement - it's holiday season coming up which means tips. A little stretching of the rules means a few extra greenbacks in the envelope. If it's a rental building there might be an apt that may be empty and not ready to be shown, could keep it in there.
Third - buy a folding bike for here. I imagine it's going to cost some good money to ship it both ways - get something like a Downtube folding bike, throw on a different set of handlebars and use it to train on. If you're going to spend ~$100 for shipping and ~100 on storage you're almost there plus you'll have a bike in both places.

Def. ask if your parent's building has basement storage first. Parking in a garage should be your last resort. Security in most garages is sketchy at best. I like the Mini storage idea. You can get the smallest space & access it any time you want.

They are in Brooklyn, but they offer multi-rider computrainers. I don't know if you must have your own bike to use it or if they have something there for you.

You can get a decent work-out on a crappy rental bike, it's just not as fun. Think of it as a kind of cross training
Your Mom should understand your bike habit by now. It is not like you are bringing home a German Shepard, jeesh! Could you find a fellow cyclist in your Moms building maybe?
If you really get stuck it is possible that you could store your bike at my place in Brooklyn, if you have no other possibilities. I live in a big loft. We can hang it in a locked hallway with my other bikes. I will give you keys to the building and the hallway so you can arrive/go as you please. Your Mom has to put me in the will, though..

for the winter, i'm joing a club near my work. with our company discount it's only $25 a month. brand new everything, it just opened a week ago. should keep me in decent shape over the winter.
