Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The Harrisburg Club has rides that leave from across the hospital every Tuesdays.

Check the Norhteast forum in Regional Forums, there are a few threads for PA in there and quite a few Harrisburg riders.

The Pennsylvania State Police have an annual Metric Century ride every year late in April in Hershey. They have a northern and southern route that gives you a good tour of the area. https://www.pspmetriccentury.com/

I'm from Lancaster County, about 45 minutes from Hershey. I don't know how to compare it to other areas since I grew up here but there are quite a few riders. Some things I think you'll look forward too are a wide range of scenic riding condition from flat, to hilly to mountains that aren't that far away. There are also professional and amatuer races, and a variety of rides. On the downside there's plenty of bicycle hating rednecks.

Floyd Landis is also from the area if that's worth anything.

This Yahoo search might be helpful too.

I rode in the Tour de Cure near there last year, and I understand the Harrisburg club does a century on a very similar route. If the rest of the cycling in that area is as nice as the TdC, I would say you are going to be in a nice cycling area...

Of course, it is somewhat relative to where you are moving in from...

EDIT:

Also there is a tradition of several Pennsylvania area riders from the forum to meet for the Covered Bridges Metric Century in Lancaster county each year. Hope to see you there.

God, this was nuts for me. I had just started cycling and previously my longest distance was 30 miles.

The looooong climb (you know which one!) was grueling for me... then just after the climb, I took a wrong turn. I ended up doing 80+ miles. I was the last one done as when I pulled into the school there were just a couple of people (looked like organizers sitting on the grass chatting. As soon as they saw me they left, so I think they were waiting for my slowpoke ass to finish.

Thanks for all of the information. I am looking forward to making the move. I hope to make the Covered Bridges Metric Century. I read about it with envy for the last two years.

Well, I did take 2 wrong turns, and missed one during the TdC.... I missed the long climb and still ended up at 60 miles. I also somehow missed one of the rest stops at a point where I needed it.

I also at one point just gave up on getting to the next rest stop and ate some fig newtons... Then got to the rest stop about 3 blocks later. I gues I should have used my cue sheet.

However, even with the wrong turns I really enjoyed the rolling hills and nice scenery... A couple of areas stand ut in my mind... especially along the various waterways.
