I don't know about you, but the thought of trashing my iPhone and having to replace it because of a spill or having it ejected from the mount is a lot more than a basic Cateye Strada or similar.
But, to each his own.
But, to each his own.

If you can afford a $1200 bike and a $200 phone, you can afford a $20 computer.

Money:
- The bike itself was a graduation gift from my wonderful, wonderful, wonderful parents. I myself purchased only the helmet, shoes (found some for $80CAD!), accessories. A very lucky position to be in, and I don't for one minute take it for granted.
- Insane, soul-crushing law school debt + not having started work yet = crazy penny pinching
- Although I know I could pick up a cheap computer like that Cat Eye — or something similarly priced from WalMart — I'd rather save a bit more so I may also get cadence + HR through the same accessory.
Stability:
- If I crash, it's true I can't say whether it would survive. But as for being ejected, the DIY mount I've created is — surprisingly — very secure. I've been riding like this for just over a month without incident. Last two days I rode this amazing downhill where I hit 72KM/hr over very bumpy pavement and it didn't budge. I've hit railroad tracks where I thought for sure I'd flatted, dropped from curbs, and the like and it's never come close to falling off. The old leather cell phone case beneath it plus the elastic bands (thank you broccoli bunches!) offer sufficient shock absorption and security.

That bar position is hurting my eyes!!! Stem up is fine if it works for you but if you must have the bars tilted up that far then something else is "off" with your fit somewhere.....

To add on his defense, the bar wasn't like that when I brought it to the shop.

Just found this thread. I've been cycling for almost 2 months now. I commute, ride distance, and have been spending lots of time in the clyde forum (although I'm 10 pounds from being an outsider there. Got my bike off Craigslist.
2008 Caad 9 6 Frame. Previous owner upgraded to ultegra rear derailleur, brakes, crank, and wheelset; 105 shifters, front derailleur. Specialized Saddle, Richey Pro Stem, Bontager Seatpost, and Conti UltraSports. Cost me 700 flat.
After this picture was taken I added a Polar CS200.
Soon to upgrade:
New Bar Tape: Obliterated my old tape is a nasty slideout not to long ago.
Cassette: Going to get the full 11-28t Ultegra cassette for the hilly rides.
Tires: The Conti's are pretty awful, going to get ultra race or 4000.
Bottle Cage #2: 1 is not enough.

Bought a pair of new Dura Ace 7400 white hoods from Total Cycling (~$33 USD total incl. shipping. Took ~10 days to arrive) for my Trek 2000 rain bike. I am a very happy man!
