Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where did you hear that? The old man was talking to his mate last night who'd be in a position to know but he didn't mention it.

fark knows really.

I know my mate got caught at some lights on Thursday morning with cj sutton, and he didnt want to chase for the next 3 k's cause he was waiting for Sunday.

I would have helped, I have nothing to save for. But the mrs only gives me one pass out a day, train in morn or track at night.

Looks like jono did pretty well at the nationals. Totally dominated by Victorians ofcourse.

Do they even know how to ride bikes in Sydney?

Who is going to the elite RR in Ballarat tomorrow?

I've been told if you are going on the hill the window of opportunity to park your car up there is 10-10.30am.

I checked out the Eastern Vets race calendar today, saw they were racing today at Dunlop Rd, at the reasonable time of 2pm, so I actually went and strapped on a number.

Good old Dunlop Rd is a heaps easier course than Sandown

If you drive to Melton, then ride the rest of the way -- nah, make that Fooscray -- you won't have to worry about getting a good spot on the hill.

2pm?? Lazy vics

We're racing at 7.30 tomorrow morning, which means I'll be up at 5, as it takes an hour to ride there. Got to try and put down a halfway-decent time in the17.6 km TT, as they've bumped me up to A Grade after my efforts two weeks ago. Should be "interesting"

A-grade vets Eastern Vets had a nice small field of 21. Bewdy! About time I found a pack smaller than 50.

Coz I'm the world's worst sprinter, I looked at my watch an the 55min mark, then took off with one of my patented '5 min attacks'!! Four or 5 laps later, I had a decent gap with one other dude, but still no bell. D'OH. The bell didn't ring 'til after 2 more laps. Needless to say, I totally stuffed up my timing, or the marshall did (). So, after we were caught, I kinda cracked it with meself and pulled out near the last bend and said g'day to Flipper, who was doing corner duty.

I was just glad to finish without any back pain....or any other pain

sounds like the time i was riding along and saw Rainford's bike outside one of the Mordy pubs, then I went in and asked him what the fark he was doing. He goes: "ah, nothing wrong with having a couple of VBs during training"

the dude said it was 55mins plus the bell, I think, so i actually took off at the 52 min mark. Then Phil tells me that '55 mins' is only a guide, and if there's chance of a congested finish with another grade, they could keep them out there for up to 10 or 15mins extra. D'OH!! 'Back in my day', it was an hour plus 3, no matter what.

I'd have thought it was more a map or sign reading issue. You're probably worried you'll end up in Adelaide.

I was minding my corner, working on my tan when I saw this bloke go off the front of A grade in a big way... thought it was Justin Davis cos he often attacks that hard, but nope, some other bloke with a big motor that I hadn't seen before... it was Nev!
It was only timing that lost it cos if it had gone to schedule (55min) he would have been too far off the front for the others to catch.
Like the seppo's say "he's got some guns"

Funniest part was after the races, I had to ride back with 3 witches hats, one of them Stop/Slow lollypop signs, bags and empties and had a bit of a battle getting it all on the bike etc... after chatting with Nev, I looked down and saw that during my fight with the marshalling gear etc, I'd left the biggest farking chainring tatt you've ever seen... he must've thought "what a knobhead"

Thank fark you're not in B grade Oz

Yeah well, he *is* a product of the GPS generation - probably can't find his way to the loo without the help of TomTom.

And you're expecting him to get to Ballarat**********
