he won't be missed in every sense of the word: cyclists will be using his web site for years...

DavidLee 02-24-08 07:45 PM

So sad but he will be celebrated.

I haven't logged onto these forums in some time only to just find out about the passing of a great man. Sheldon, I have never chatted with you nor participated in any shared threads with you but you have impacted me a great deal. I'd like to think that the bike parts I have ordered from Harris Cyclery have passed through your expert hands before finding my doorstep. :)

Thanks to the internet you will always be remembered & celebrated by those you have helped so much & the many more that you will still undoubtedly help through your articles. Your genuine enthusiasm & love of cycling was plain for all to see. I grieve for the loss your family, friends & co-workers must feel.

I simply thank you for everything you have shown us, God bless you Sheldon.

When the snow melts from the mountains of Central Colorado and the trails and roads clear I will once again be on my cobbled together 96'er single speed I use to make the 2 mile run to get the mail. My dog Kelso loves to run alongside and it is by far the best part of the day. Thank you Sheldon for your inspiration and showing me a path back to those wonderful days, the ones filled with that special feeling you got as a kid from just riding a bike. I never would have had the knowledge to built the single-speed or the encouragement to get through the challenges without your support. May you rest in peace Mr. Brown. Wherever you are please accept a small token of thanks from those of us you have affected in our daily lives.

Cheers.

He will be missed! His information was plentiful.

Anbaric Cog 03-05-08 12:30 AM

I never met him, but I loved to use him as the ultimate authority, "...but Sheldon says..."
I love his web site and his personality that fills, it. he was an inveterate tinkerer and not caught up in the
"what is the best frame material" b.s. that fills much of this forum. His site is quite a legacy.

Wow!!!! I have read his website but I had no idea he was so well known in the cycling community. What an inspiration. I would have never thought of putting tape over my helmet vents to hold in heat on my own.

I struggle with the chain cleaning method. It takes awhile.

I often thought of that picture of the bearded fellow with the ornament atop his helmet.

My deepest sympathy to the family. He may no longer be with us in body but he will be, without doubt, with us in spirit forever.

See you on the other side Mr. Brown.

Sheldon, the biggest thank you I can give is the sharing of your knowledge.
You are a cycling avatar.
Thanks as always.
Mike

I am sorry to hear this.

I read his site all the time, and have been to his shop many times.

I heard that they had a ride for him last Sunday. It was a very nice day out considering the cold weather we have had recently. I was happy to know the sun was shining on his memorial ride.

webist 03-10-08 02:45 PM

Harris Cyclery must be a tourist attraction thanks to Sheldon.

scjparker 03-10-08 08:56 PM

I am very sorry to hear about this. Sheldon impacted me, and many others I'm sure, more than he could have even known.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Thanks, Sheldon, for everything.

I have been away from BF for a bit, and I come back to see this...

I hope he is riding pain free and with the wind to his back.

RIP

I too just discovered this bit of news and I am shocked and saddened by it. Sheldon was very helpful to many people and a great asset to the sport.

sunnyk 03-13-08 05:03 PM

I am really shocked and saddened by this news, I am just starting out as a biker and have been visiting his website quite often the past few days. My condolences to the family and friends, He truly will be missed.

dzinehaus 03-29-08 06:04 PM

WHAT??? I'm reading the countless posts upon posts and I still can't believe it.

You'll be missed Sheldon "I have a name for almost everything" Brown
Condolences go out to the Brown Family also.

kuwahara 05-05-08 09:49 PM

ajst2duk 05-11-08 08:48 PM

Yep me too.. he was one of the most helpful to me even from the other side of the world. Got me up & running & I've never looked back since. R.I.P. big guy.

beaverstuff 06-26-08 02:54 PM

nothing more to say

If I were to offer anything to respect his passing, it would only be a mumur, a whisper in the wind, which would fail to be noticed by anyone. Having taken note of other mumurs, there abound kind prayers and whispered thoughts that are still building into a tumult which will precede his arrival into those welcoming arms. Rest thou weary traveller, rest.

When I first started on this path of learning about cycling. Sheldons website was one of the first I came upon and was stuck on for days. That is how I think I found this website. I couldn't believe how much time and effort he put into the website and all for FREE 99. That is what blew me away. So thankful...just so thankful.

Me and my friend who work on our college's cycling co-op were planning on visiting him over a school break since we're only a couple of hours away. It never happened because we heard the news of his passing. We were both pretty down :/

Namenda 07-31-08 01:17 PM

I work just down the street from Harris Cyclery, and saw Mr. Brown fairly often. As cliche' as it sounds, he always seemed to have a smile on his face. A genuinely good person.

I don't want to seem insensitive, but this thread has probably been a sticky long enough at this point. Perhaps it's ripe for the archives.

intence 09-02-08 11:51 PM

So tonight I was doing some simple web stuff, and typed "HTML Sample" into Google. First hit to come up was Sheldon's. I think it's amazing just how much content he had put up simply to help others. He will be missed.

We have decided that this thread will remain a sticky for one year.
