Installing 10 speed cassette.
Note: This is my first time putting on a cassette.
So I'm putting my ultegra cassette on my rear wheel and I do it wrong the first time. The spacing looks off on the smaller cogs. Oh I forgot the little black spacers, duh...
Fixed that problem, now there's a silver metal ring, that isn't splined to go on the cassette and I have no idea what it's for but think that it might be important.
What is it? I thought it's the piece that might go on right before the lockring, but it seems that it would get in the way of the chain. Does it possible go between the two smallest cogs?
Thanks for the help!

Yep, it's the spacer that goes behind the 10speed cassette on a 9 speed carriage. The 10 speed cassette is just slightly narrower than 9 speed cassettes so it needs s space to go on a 9 speed freehub body. You wouldn't need it if you're putting it on a 10-speed specific rear hub. Check which kind of hub you have first.

Do you have that Park tool for the lockring installation? I know this was one thing that sent me over to the LBS...

As mentioned the little ring goes onto the freehub body before putting the 3 large cog carrier. It acts as a tiny spacer. You need it.
Also....check the spacers. If they say "105" in white lettering along the OD then you put the cassette on worng and damaged it. You can't mix 105 and Ultegra. It can lead to explosions.
If you send it to me I can dispose of it properly.

Haha. I had to do a double take when I first saw them, but I was pretty sure they said 10S. If I was drunk and installing them, I might have taken you up on your offer.
I'll use the washer, the wheels are neuvations and I'm pretty sure that they're not simply 10 speed hubs.
The annoying thing was that one of the 10S spacers was bent, so I had to bend it back into shape to get it to fit on properly. Hopefully that won't mess anything up.
Thanks for the help!

BTW - Yes, it does say 10S for 10 Speed Spacer. Threw me for a loop the first time as well.

And it's done!
I don't have a torque wrench so I don't think it's at 40Nm. I think it's probably higher. I used a chain whip and got it out pretty much as tight as possible without feeling like I was overdoing it.
Thanks for the help guys!
Much appreciated!
Edit: Crap. I forgot to lube the threads for the lockring...
Am I screwed for when I try to take this off in 2500-3000 miles?

One of my friends ordered an Ultegra or DA cassette from Competitive Cyclist a few years back. When he went to mount the cassette, it said "105" on it, so he called all full of attitude that they had sent him a 105 cassette in a DA/Ult box. When I broke the news to him, he felt so bad he called CC back, tracked down the CS rep and apoligized about 50 times.

Does anyone have an extra spacer sitting in their toolbox that I can have or buy? I got a spacer from my LBS but the it's too wide/thick and it doen't fit in the groove in the back of the cassette. So if I put it on the cassette it doesn't sit flush and it wobbles when I spin.
I'll pay postage if that helps!
Or give you a couple dollars for your trouble. Please PM me if you have one or two you can spare.
Thanks!
Gary
