Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Peeing Outdoors = Sex Offender?

Is it true you can be convicted of sex crimes and become a "registered sex offender" if you get caught peeing outdoors?
I read something to the effect in a few different places lately. I have had to "drain my main vein" a couple times outside recently while on a ride and Im concerned. Im not hanging my @#$% out in the street for the whole world to see or anything. Im talking about, going off of the road, in some cover and taking a leak.

Discuss....

Runners do it often during longer races.

They could try and get you on a public indecencey (sp) charge, which could land you in the sex offender group.

Yes there have been cases of ppl being convicted as registered sex offenders but i'm pretty sure its more likely to happen if your pissing in an alley and is aimed more at ppl who are bar hoping drunk doing that. If you hop off the road and go behind some trees i mean i doubt a cop is going to bust you just try not to make it obvious, i personally don't enjoy driving down the road seeing some guy draining his terrorist .

Happened at one of our races - so I was told. The guy did it without realizing kids were around. "Busted!"

It depends on the laws in your state. In Florida, exposure of sexual organ "in a vulgar or indecent manner" is a misdemeanor that does not get you listed. "Lewd or lascivious exhibition" is a felony that does get you on the list. Merely hosing down the weeds, even if the kiddies see you, is much more likely to end up as disorderly conduct than a crime that would result in sex offender listing.

Lots of communities don't have specific crimes for "public urination" so the charge is likely to be more along the lines of "public indecency" or "indecent exposure" which often cary the sex offender label.

I agree that it is overkill.

Feasible? I guess so. Likely? not really. If you're gonna show the non-public parts in public, you need to take a look around first.

Where we're living now (Philippines) it's the norm and, strange as it may seem, you do finally sort of get use to seeing men peeing in public. I haven't gotten there myself though. Don't feel comfortable peeing on a wall on a city street while being brushed by passers by.

Cyclists peeing on the side of the road is another reason why people hate cyclists. Do some preplanning or learn how to control your bladder.

We would hope that our law enforcement and court system knows there's a difference between a athlete relieving himself and some nut case up to no good.

If you're not in a race, stop and find a place to pee. It's not a big deal. Find a public restroom, or take the time to make damn sure you're not going to be seen.

One of the big complaints locals have about cyclists is peeing in public.

What's there to discuss? Elite Tour De France cyclists have to pee right there on the side of the road 'coz they can't waste any time walking into the bushes.

It's a normal/necessary bodily function. Indecent exposure? I guess if u purposely do it showman-like. The difference is black&white and known to any adult.

it's not that hard to conceal. crouch down and act as if you're attending to your bike. but again. i have a credo i live by: "i'll piss any where, any time". comes from a long history of beer drinking.

Amsterdam has urinals right out on the sidewalk. Granted, they're arranged to provide some privacy, but that's just another thing to add to the list of things they're not hung up about.

Back in high school French class (mid '70s), we watched a French documentary on the Tour from the early 70s. It contained graphic footage of racers relieving themselves while riding (urinating, not relieving themselves in another way...).
