Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the matter? Can't stand eating a little dirt?

Fly Ti MTB Ride Report: 5 miles of fire road today (took the dog out for a run) but the new cassette (11-32) is perfect (I can stay in the middle/big ring 98% of the time), the new tires are GREAT, the Fly Ti is GREAT, climbs fantastic, handles amazingly well on technical stuff, the shock feels outstanding (may be noodly for hard core MTB racer dudes, but that's not me) and overall couldn't be more pleased. Those Contis are a nice balance between everything I want in an MTB tire, relatively light @ 525 grams, they handle loose mud/sand/technical conditions well.

Here's the big difference between the Fly Ti and my old Jamis 853: on the Fly Ti you feel as if you have suspension under you in the rear as well. Really has a great ride. The Ti feels considerably more responsive, much better feel than the steel had. The SID fork feels far more supple and subtle than the old Manitou carbon (c. 1999). XTR shifting is still outstanding, that hasn't changed. I am thrilled. Thanks BD.
You still need those Ksyrium ES MTB wheels.

That bike is a beauty. Dont worry about the bar-end comments. Bar ends on a MTB are like traditional bend road bars. It says that you are a veteran.

Or it shows the terrain you ride on. For where I ride, there aren't many long climbs, bar ends would be overkill. If I had long, gruelling climbs, I might consider them.

Grip shift is the ****, nothing like going from 11 to 34 in one quick twist.

The bar ends will stay, XTR Rapidfire RULES.

Here's the best part about being an MTB Fred: if an MTB Fred passes through the woods, camelbak and all, and nobody is there to see him, is he still a Fred?

Man that bike friggin ROCKS. And you think I was a BD Shill before? Forget about it now.

That bike looks great. I always wanted to try a ti hardtail, but just bought a heavy dualie. The last hardtail I had was a 29 pound Trek that beat the crap out of me on the rough stuff.

So if you ride this off a curb, would you wish you had full suspension or not?

Veteran MTB riders use bar ends..... don't think so ... bar ends are more trouble then they are worth ... you'll find that out the hard way first time they snag a vine or sappling on a tight fast twisty single track descent. Might have let it go if there was a pop lock on the Sid but unless you can lock the fork out you are not going to do extended climbs out of the saddle (unless you really liked pogo sticking as a kid).

Rapid fire absoultely rules !!! Like the new XTR deraileur ... cool bike other than the bar ends.

This is Chester, we don't have curbs. But it went over the one in the Piermont Bicycle Connection parking lot like it wasn't even there. I might want a full suspension if I spent 2-4 hours bombing up and down highly technical/brutal terrain. For my needs a hard tail is perfect for numerous reasons. Love the light weight. If it works for the World Cup MTB racers, I think it will work for Pcad's 1-2 hour off road forays every other week.

Don't need suspension to ride off curbs.

My pals ride single speed hard tails. Figure that one out. Masochistic lunatics.

I nominate this for dumbest post of the day. Julien Absalon would agree.

Getting off topic about how cool the bike is, but.....

This is exactly my point.....vets do/have used bar-ends.....they are pre-suspension, ala early to mid nineties. I still use my Club Roost Al barends on my bike circa 1993. I do absolutely agree with your point about needing a lockout.
