Is a $20,000 bicycle better than a $15,000 car?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

IMO, the money makes little difference. A bicycle is always better than a car.

Unless it's really cold out.

Only if you put the $20,000 bike on top of the $15,000 car.

Throw a few bikes on the roof and their value quickly exceeds the value of many cars I see parked near the start line of races.

Priorities straightened.

You are not a really cyclist unless....

You have a bike payment, but your car is paid for...OR

Your team provides (or in my case, provided) your bikes for free.

I don't think so.
A $20,00 bike isn't going to be much better than a $10,000, where as a $15,000 car can be much better than a $7500 car.

I reckon it's really fukn stooopid to spend that much on a road bike.

I was speaking to a guy the other day whose mate bought one of those 'Ferrari' Colnagos for $19,000 AUD!!!!!!

I mean, even if the frame-set was about $7,000 and the wheels were $4,000, where to hell does the other $8,000 go???? On the bars, stem, seat and group-set?? It's crazy!!

A $20,000 bike is $5,000 better than a $15,000 car.

Well, my bike IS more expensive than my car. But then again, I only have a Trek 1.2 entry level road bike (around 950 bucks bike+gear+taxes) and a very crappy old Hyundai (estimated value 850).

It gets to the question of value in bicycles. I have always been astonished what people will pay for a top of the line bicycle. Especially when you consider what the same money will buy in a motorcycle... $10,000 will get a really nice (but not top of the line) bicycle. That same $10,000 will get a motorcycle that is faster and handles as well/better than MotoGP machines from a few years ago... basically, as fast as you want to go, it will go.

I dunno. I was talking with my wife and her friend yesterday about priorities. Her friend said that if we wanted to go on vacation, buy the nice bicycles etc. etc. we just needed to reprioritize... just look in the garage where we have a Volvo cross country and a Mini Cooper S - if we had bought Hyundai's instead we'd have been able to do all those other things that we now claim we can't afford.

It is all priorities. And for you a $20k bike may be better than a $15k car, depending on your priority set. For me, I can't yet extract all the capabilities out of my $1000 bicycle, so it would be a waste.

Finally, we get into the price range where you can buy a *new* bike.

It is to the guy who can buy it without even thinking about the cost. Chances are that guys drives a $100K car or two.

To wit (I drive a 2006 VW Jetta TDI, about 26K and a used 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport that I paid 6500 for 4 years ago)

I can afford a Ducati 1098 (15k) without much worry. My wife might raise an eyebrow.
I could probably do a Ducati 1098S (24k) if i scarifice and sweat and am willing to get a divorce.
I cannot afford a 1098R (45K) nor would I want to at my current salary.

Knowing me, I'll probably buy a used 848 (10-11k)

Same here. If I had my 3 main bikes on my trunk rack and someone were to steal my car, the car would be incidental. The car would represent about 15% of the monetary value the bikes would.

Hmm. I have a $7,000 bike and an $80,000 car, but I prefer the bike. The car sits in the driveway.
