Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

yeah it really depends. When i show up for the local group ride I'm fast. When I trian solo I'm pretty fast.

When I show up to a good Tri I'm a piece of dog crap on the side of the road.

Reletively speaking though I can train solo at about 20mph on my roadie for about 80 miles, I'll do a rolling half Ironman at 21mph on my TT bike and I get smoked by the strong guys all the time. I think that i'm better than slow, but far from fast.

OP remember the more you ride the better you'll get. I bought my first proper road bike in 1989 while living in San Luis Obispo. My 'big' ride consisted of the round trip from SLO to Morrow Bay and back. A whopping 25 miles. Today that's my recovery ride before work but at the time that was epic for me.

Reminds me of my senior year in high school, when they asked us to come up with a collevtive team quote to describe that years team......quote ended up being: "We may not be big, but we're slow!" Cracks me up to this day and just felt like sharing..............

I have a friend that does that ride. I have yet to reach that level. They are faster than my regular sunday ride which is out of Big Wheel in Hollywood.

Yesterday's ride was great. I finished right along with the front-runners =)
