Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I think those were pretty fast but not nearly as fast as the guys who won, or the higher categories. FWIW, I was blown out of the water when I found out that the winners of the elite nationals road race did 120 miles at over 26mph.

55mph on a downhill is my personal best, although there is a guy I ride with that has done well over 60 on the same hill. I've tried to get his wheel the last few times we've gone down it together but if he starts from behind me, he goes by so fast that I can't accerlate on. I have to start with him next time.
You're a climber and he's probably a sprinter?

Several years ago I did a crit during BC superweek. I'd missed the entire season before due to a serious injury and was training and racing my way back into fitness. I was probably at 80% of what I had been at prior to having a **** brown Toyoto crush my lung.

There had been a world cup track event canceled in the US so Victoria (with it's new Commonwealth games velodrome) stepped up to cover the event (even though it technical didn't qualify as a suitable venue).

So a bunch of the track guys stuck around to do this crit, Gastown and a few of the road races.

It was an 80 lap crit and a total clock puncher.

I have NO MEMORY of the first 40 laps. When I could finally look up from the rear hub I had been staring at for the last 40 laps, there were 40 more to go. I was the last guy in a long, thin line of riders. The pace was so high that there was no yo-yoing. It was full gas all the way around.

Apparently there had been some racing going on up front during that time and guys were ATTACKING from this!

That's fast.
