You access Old Mtn Road from 9W. If you're going north, you turn right. If you're going south, you turn left. Give it a whirl and get back to me on what you think. YOU? Bring a 34 x 32 and be prepared to keel over regardless.

Old Mtn Road goes UP the hill from 9W. It is about .25 miles south of the Thruway Interchange on 9W. You may be confusing it with Ash Street in Piermont. Old Mtn Road is considerably steeper.

I've seen this book advertised. But I hardly think one book can contain ALL the hardest hill climbs in the US.

I think I know what you're talking about. Is it technically called Rt. 59? During the summer my teammate and I went up 59, and then some other roads until we rejoined 9w in Piermont.

Ash street is steep, but not that steep.

It's Old Mountain Road SOUTH. Old Mtn Road North is some tame road in Nyack. Look it up. Go to where 9W hits the Thruway and
go south .25 mile, turn right. Bring your oxygen.

It makes Ash Street look like Nebraska dude.

Books such as this usually only cover things that are of interest to the masses -- so it can sell copy. There are literally thousands of roads in this country that Mr. Summerson has never heard of or been on. Here is just one of the reviews.

I have that book. Good read. Not all CA climbs are included. In the Santa Monica's, Las Flores is 20% for at least a mile. So is the illegal Tuna Canyon nearby. Heartstoppers, both.

Pretty much all the ones you know about in the San Gabriels (rt 39, Crystal Lake, Mt Wilson, Baldy, Angeles Oaks, etc), plus Palomar. Also Mt Pino near Santa Barbara.

How do you do on the really steep climbs such as a Las Flores? Ever done it or something similar? I basically just keep the crank turning over. Curious what someone with some zip in their legs does on something like a Las Flores. If you ever want to do LF, let me know and I'll ride along... in my car while I shoot video of you:D

That would be fine. I just grind it out. On hilly rides I ride a compact and 12-27. Fargo street which is in the 30% range I did on a 50-34 and 12-27. That hill is just stupid steep and no training value whatsoever just bragging rights.
