You access Old Mtn Road from 9W. If you're going north, you turn right. If you're going south, you turn left. Give it a whirl and get back to me on what you think. YOU? Bring a 34 x 32 and be prepared to keel over regardless.

Old Mtn Road goes UP the hill from 9W. It is about .25 miles south of the Thruway Interchange on 9W. You may be confusing it with Ash Street in Piermont. Old Mtn Road is considerably steeper.

There are others that are 20% avg over a mile.

I still think you are wrong. You might want to check your stuff.

I've seen this book advertised. But I hardly think one book can contain ALL the hardest hill climbs in the US.

That's just wrong Sisko. PM me the uncensored image asap.

I think I know what you're talking about. Is it technically called Rt. 59? During the summer my teammate and I went up 59, and then some other roads until we rejoined 9w in Piermont.

Ash street is steep, but not that steep.

You'd be surprised at how thorough it is. Especially when mentioning climbs > 20%.

It's Old Mountain Road SOUTH. Old Mtn Road North is some tame road in Nyack. Look it up. Go to where 9W hits the Thruway and
go south .25 mile, turn right. Bring your oxygen.

It makes Ash Street look like Nebraska dude.

Books such as this usually only cover things that are of interest to the masses -- so it can sell copy. There are literally thousands of roads in this country that Mr. Summerson has never heard of or been on. Here is just one of the reviews.

"So if you are that dude or dudette who is seeking to climb some of the craziest passes in the United States and don’t know how to go about it, then you need this book. Consider it the Bible if you will, because it has all the major road climbs and details about each from Lincoln Gap to Brasstown Bald. All the details are there: total elevation, average gradient, length and category. A few scenic shots are included as well as a map of the surrounding area so you can actually find the road. It’s a cool book that should be kept in your glovebox, or in your back pocket if you are that crazy to seek each one by bike. Mmm… Not a bad idea! - Road Magazine"

Well then I will have to check it out. In the meantime tell me what he has for Southern Cal?

I have that book. Good read. Not all CA climbs are included. In the Santa Monica's, Las Flores is 20% for at least a mile. So is the illegal Tuna Canyon nearby. Heartstoppers, both.

Pretty much all the ones you know about in the San Gabriels (rt 39, Crystal Lake, Mt Wilson, Baldy, Angeles Oaks, etc), plus Palomar. Also Mt Pino near Santa Barbara.

So as I suspected major climbs nothing really steep. Baldy to the lifts being the steepest of the ones listed that I have personally climbed and that is less than 15%.. http://www.socalvelo.com/images/Profiles/mt.baldy.gif

I don't think I have permission to do that. I can, however, assure you that it was a very pertinent and proud moment for Brandy.

How do you do on the really steep climbs such as a Las Flores? Ever done it or something similar? I basically just keep the crank turning over. Curious what someone with some zip in their legs does on something like a Las Flores. If you ever want to do LF, let me know and I'll ride along... in my car while I shoot video of you:D

That would be fine. I just grind it out. On hilly rides I ride a compact and 12-27. Fargo street which is in the 30% range I did on a 50-34 and 12-27. That hill is just stupid steep and no training value whatsoever just bragging rights.

Sorry old man -- these rules are for your own protection.

At your age, you can't afford to get all wound up or your ticker could give up the ghost. Besides, you would also be at risk of a crushed skull resulting from a disapproving and skillet wielding Mrs. Pcad.

DScott 09-25-08 05:29 PM

Max grade on Decker Cyn. isn't 20%, more like 14%. http://www.lagrange.org/local_climbs.htm

Quite enough, however, to make more than a few people puke on this year's Mulholland Challenge.

ehidle 09-25-08 05:55 PM

pffft.. those hills are childsplay. HTFU and quit complaining you big sissy...
