What on earth happened to the "i just bought a 4k bike & got ripped off" thread?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The store MAY NOT have been totally in the wrong during the transaction. We'll never know. However the store is now COMPLETELY IN THE WRONG for the coercive behavior. That we know.
I'll make sure i mention this to all my NY friends.

I feel for the chick...rather sour experience when buying gear for an activity/hobby she's passionate about.

+1
you're all ganging up on the store with the mentality of a mob on the net. nothing new.

Ripped off how, did they bait and switch her bike for a different one?
Sell her a fake?
Misrepresent her bike in any way?
No, she thought she was "entitled" to a discount, they offered her a nice set of wheels instead and she turned them down.

Not seeing the ripoff myself.

If he were to truly file suit (which he won't be able to win because it is the truth not libel, check the auto-admit case going on), he'd have to pay filing fee's, attorney retainer, attorney hourly rate, cost for RPD and discovery.
This is all true. What is also likely is that Bikeforums as a "service provider" can probably go behind various safe harbor laws and thus limit their liability in hosting that rant, even if it did turn out to be libel. That said, it's highly likely that if the person does get serious about having lawyers get on BF's case about things, that whoever's in charge would have to answer some form of court summons. This is time-consuming, possibly very costly if it involves travel, and for most people just not worth it. I run an internet forums myself, and several times have been threatened with similar legal recourse. In most cases I have obstinately refused to budge, knowing some of the people were all talk or just trying to stir up drama; but the fact of the matter is when push came to shove and real lawyers called (as was in the case with one trademark infringement) I pulled the content rather than deal with having to answer to a court in another state, possibly find my own defense laywers, etc.

As a proponent of civil liberties, I don't believe folding to the coercion is right, but it's also equally unfair to expect BF's administration staff to take a monetary hit (even if that just comes in wasted time) for the sake of a member's rant. If the member wants to speak out, he could start his own website/blog and do so, rather than placing the onus of legal responsibility on BF. That's just my opinion, not necessarily the actual reasoning as to why the BF admins deleted the post though.

nobody placed any responsibility on BF. The OP requested the thread be deleted.

Since you can be sure the shop won't get mad if she says things worked out and she's happy, I'd presume that if we don't see any further discussion, they didn't change their position.

However, since she disputed the charges and didn't take delivery, she's likely to get her cash back. It will just take awhile.

As someone who once worked retail....AMEX will side with the customer every single time.

Those dumb dumbs should have tried to work out something amicable as at least they would still have something of a sale and not all of this bad press.

Stupid retail managers never cease to amaze me.

She did eventually take delivery. That's when they threatened her with their lawyers unless she had the thread removed, which she did. She didn't mention whether or not she got the discount or the better wheels

The bike shop was well within their right to hold fast on the price, to run late on delivery of the bike and to throw the word lawyer around. Prospective customers are well within their right to take this into account when considering doing business with them. This is a very simple matter.

That would mean she didn't get the discount since that's what she wanted. That she hasn't said anything in this thread suggests that if she wanted to say anything, it could make someone unhappy.

Having worked in sales before, hers is a common situation. There even can be screwball pricing arrangements where a business can make money selling something for $X but lose money the next day selling it for $X + $50 even though it is the same exact item and it's been there all along.

However, you gotta work with people. The real money comes from repeat customers and referrals. Those are low effort and low maintenance sales.

Before she had the thread pulled she stated she would not post anymore about it but would be willing to talk about it in PM's.

You don't think coming in here and naming the store and claiming to have gotten "screwed" by aid was a tad heavy handed, P?

Got it in one. The thread was pulled at the OP's request. She would also prefer to let this matter die.
