Given that handlebar set up, bullhorns would be like the second coming in regards to comfort. I read the original post and didn't think he got flamed like other things I've seen on here, but I can see how someone new would have been put off. Some of the people on here know what they're doing and have the knowledge to help but perhaps it's best to take it easy on the people who are completely brand new to road cycling because it's nice to be able to help someone sort out their cycling issues. Now after instructing someone to go and look at pics of bike set up they come back with some incredibly uncomfortable looking set up then some flaming is in order. There's a certain humor here that some will either appreciate or not, but most members are pretty helpful so I don't think this attack on the self esteem of members is entirely fair.

Nothing but net on that one PCad.

I thought that kid was messing around, that bike is totally screwed. I think my 13 y.o. bro in law knows better than to do that to a bike, and he lives in a gaming chair glued to an xbox 360......kids these days!!!

Sixty Fiver 11-30-08 12:51 PM

As far as hazings go... that was pretty mild.

But some good points have been made here in that since you all recognize that the road forum is about as hostile as it gets around here (and you could take lessons form the guys in ss/fg in manners) perhaps the posters here should initiate some positive changes on their own so we don't have to babysit a bunch of "grown" men as much as we do.

Ponder that if you will.

Blasphemy!

:p

ss/fg = just as bad, if not more brutal.

hammy56 11-30-08 01:03 PM

[QUOTE=JayC;7939198]I dont think most of the people that post here would have the balls to say stuff like this to people's faces anyway.

Correct.

uke 11-30-08 01:03 PM

SS/FG is way more mellow. People rip on gear, but the humor to meanness ratio is much better there.

Beaker 11-30-08 01:03 PM

I agree with BillyD's sentiment. I find BF somewhat schizo -- the road forum is a morrass of amusing posts, dry wit and occasional nuggets of good info. However there are plenty of short, snarky comments that aren't helpful and also a bunch of junk posts by people who should know better. Everyone has the opportunity to ignore "Hey guys, help with [XXXX]" type posts, so why not do that instead?

On the other hand the regional forums are totally different - I really enjoy my interactions there, have been on some local group rides and have got to know quite a few BF members that way. I think the main point is you have a way higher chance of meeting someone you interact with on the regional boards and folks treat one another as actual human beings rather than playing internet tough guys all the time.

Open his ears and shut his mouth for a while. During that time, read the forum and do some searches to get a feel for the place before posting and starting threads. It has always been simple netiquette to get a flavor of the place you're posting before diving in.

Maybe this place could be a little kinder and gentler, but it's also a basic social skill to learn about your environment and the expected behavior when you go somewhere new.

EXCUSE ME!!

You can't blame others for your own irresponsibility. No one has a gun to your head forcing you to be unsociable, intolerant, callous or a meanie. We're talking about basic social skills here . . . when you're talking to somebody face to face you treat them with respect or risk getting punched in the face. Why can't that same respect extend to the internet?

Why did you type excuse me twice?

Did you think we missed it the first time? :innocent:

I think it's quite arguable that if you're a bike weenie and/or you frequent BF, you have no conceivable grounds for self-esteem.

rizz 11-30-08 01:08 PM

I didn't see any problem until a moderator hopped into the thread then eventually locked it.

This is the busiest forum here, isn't it? Must be doing something right.

Hammer02 11-30-08 01:09 PM

I like it here.

The Road forum might be tough...but so is life. This is nothing compared to 8th grade.....kids are vicious man.

It'll probably get his position more upright. I suspect that the bike is too long in the top tube for him and is compensating by rotating the drops into a position where he can actually ride in them and use the brakes. The other alternative would be to rotate the handlebars so far back in order to use the hoods that it might appear ridiculous that way also.

patentcad 11-30-08 01:12 PM

If you actually think the Road Forum is tough you have led a sheltered life.

We're still making excuses:

Why doesn't the guy htfu?

What else does he expect of the internet?

Why don't the owners do more to deter this?

I think the guy was trolling.

Face it guys, some people have a mean streak or issues in the real world and come here to get stuff off their chest. You butt heads with each other -- peers, equals, hardened forum members, and who really cares other than your opponent. But beating up a newbie is inexcusable, regardless of whether your paranoia leads you to believe the guy is trolling. If he's trolling, ignore him and move on. Again, you wouldn't disrespect a guy, even if he was trolling, if you had to deal with him face-to-face.

patentcad 11-30-08 01:20 PM

This thread is pretty silly, but it is in the best BF Pointless Hand Wringing Tradition.

If the kid was sincere, why didn't he latch on to the worthwhile information he was passed?

Which does bring us back to the Bullhorns.

You're makeup is starting to smear.
